Description / Table of Contents:
Acrolien was polymerized in tetrahydrofuran or toluene in the presence of lithium, sodium-, or potassium cyanide. The dependence of polymerization rate and polymer structure on the reaction medium, the temperature and the gegenion was investigated. Acrolein polymerized at temperatures less than -100°C, by sodium cyanide exclusively via the carbonyl bond yielding high molecular weight soluble poly-3,4-acrolein. However, at temperatures higher than -10°C. polymerization of the vinyl group was also observed and copolymers were obtained. The polymerization rate vs. reaction temperature curve exhibited a maximum and mininium. A mechanism is proposed, which clarifies the influence of temperature and gegenion on the propagation step and attributes the polymer structure to an equilibrium and competing propagation reaction.
Notes:
