Description / Table of Contents: Physico-chemical causes of ageing of plastified plasticsPlastified plastics are often inclined to lose the plastifier through evaporation, extraction, or surface concentration. Like the oxidative decomposition in the polymer/soflener system, these processes cause the material gradually to become brittle. The present paper brings a simple description of the thermodynamic causes of the loss of plastifier (separation; setting of vapour pressure or distribution equilibria; influence of crystallisation condition) as well as the kinetic laws governing the time curves of these ageing processes. The manifold inter-relations existing between the different physical parameters of the polymer/plastifier mixture (compatibility, vapour pressure, diffusion coefficient, effectiveness) are developed and are illustrated with the aid of previously published experimental data. Important conclusions are drawn, e. g., in regard to the conditions under which the vapour pressure of the plastifier has, altogether, any influence on the loss, and in regard to the relationship between the effectiveness of the plastifier and the other parameters affecting the ageing process. Finally, the paper discusses some fundamental points regarding the oxidative ageing of plastified plastics.
