Notes:
In the series of our studies on the initiation mechanism of vinyl polymerization initiated by dibenzoyl peroxide/dimethylaniline system and by benzoic anhydride/amine N-oxide system, it has been concluded that the systems involved anilinium ion intermediate containing bond, which was capable of homolytic decomposition to free radicals to initiate radical polymerization. In order to elucidate whether any compounds containing bond in their structures can initiate radical polymerization, the polymerization of acrylonitrile was carried out in dimethylformamide, in the presence of 1-acetoxy-2-methylpyridinium picrate. It was found that the compound was proved to initiate radical polymerization in the temperature range between 60° and 90°C., and that 2-picoline N-oxide/picryl acetate system could polymerize acrylonitrile in the same way.
