Notes: [Auszug] The third brine pool was discovered during a survey of the rift valley between the Atlantis II and Discovery Deeps. About fifteen traverses were made of this area to determine if the Atlantis II and Discovery Deeps were in direct communication. The survey shows a saddle crossing the rift valley ...

Notes: [Auszug] Recently we have been able to study the associations between C. tricolor Lesueur and D. venosus (H. M. Edwards) in the Caribbean, and C. polypus Forskal and D. gemmatus (H. M. Edwards) at Hawaii. C. tricolor showed a response to shells that was similar to C. parasitica that is, it could transfer to ...

Notes: Summary Changes in glucose concentrations were slight on incubation in a system of fresh soils, buffer, and toluene at 37°C and were not significantly detectable by a titrimetric method. Such changes would be too small to affect the accuracy of assays of enzymes hydrolysing carbohydrates in soil where activities are measured by glucose production. Oxygen uptake was slight but increased significantly when glucose was added to four undried soils incubated with toluene; uptake was greater at 37°C than at 24°C. Numbers of viable bacteria declined during incubation. Oxidation of glucose was negligible in a similar system with air-dried soils. Gluconic acid and 2-ketogluconic acid were identified as metabolic products from glucose incubated with soils and toluene. There was an approximate equivalence of oxygen uptake and acid production after incubation for 24 hours but not after longer periods. In the absence of toluene, both gluconic and 2-ketogluconic acids were readily metabolised by soils on incubation at 37°C. Results suggest that glucose oxidase and gluconate dehydrogenase are present in soils but that only a small proportion of glucose would be metabolised by oxidase activity in soils under natural conditions. Other oxidoreductase enzymes would also be active in soils.

Notes: Abstract The defatting of large skin grafts from detached tissue presents technical problems due to the nature of conventional skin grafting knives and dermatomes. Such free grafts are required following degloving injuries, or in the surgical correction of lymphoedema of the legs. The early development of a technique using standard skin-grafting knives is described, and the technical requirements of large grafts, with the problems of their preparation, are stated. A new dermatome has been designed, consisting of a special knife and dermatome plate, and the manner in which this overcomes the technical problems is indicated. Grafts up to 11 in. broad and of indefinite length can be prepared using this instrument, which provides a much greater degree of control of the graft thickness than previously obtainable, together with a marked saving in the time of its preparation. Photographs and sketches illustrate the equipment and the development of the new technique, and also provide evidence of the degree of surgical success obtained.
