Abstract Results of a theoretical and experimental study of the space-energy distribution of neutrons in the iron screen of the BR-1 reactor are presented. The experimental results are compared with multigroup calculations in the P3-approximation (one-dimensional geometry) and the P1-approximation (two-dimensional geometry). The effect of allowing for resonance blocking of the cross sections on the exactness of the description of neutron propagation in the medium is demonstrated.
