Notes: [Auszug] While the investigation of muscle obtained by biopsy contributes much invaluable knowledge to the elucidation of basic metabolic disorders of severe malnutrition at the cellular level, it does traumatize already gravely sick children. To overcome this problem, we explored the possibility of ...

Notes: A study of the cuttings of Salix atrocinerea Brot. was made by extraction with methanol, paper chromatography and Avena coleoptile straight growth test. In the acidic fraction, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA; about 15 μg per kg fresh weight) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB; about 850 μg per kg fresh weight) were isolated and identified. The growth activity of the different zones is explained by their content of these two compounds. The watersoluble residue, insoluble in ether, showed growth Stimulating activity, which probably is due to a bound auxin (IAA-sugar); alkaline breakdown of this aqueous residue, giving PHB, vanillic and p-coumaric acids, suggests the presence (in the cuttings of Salix atrocinerea) of glycosides with aglycones similar to rhamnacine and scutellareine.

Notes: [Auszug] Liver allografting experiments with pigs show that animals given no immunosuppression will survive for prolonged periods with orthotopic liver transplants. Similar animals can reject skin, kidneys and hearts rapidly. Orthotopic and accessory heterotopic liver allografts protect preferentially from ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Three cases of disseminated South American Blastomycosis with granulomatous lesions in the brain are presented. In two of them, theParacocciodioides was found in the granulomata but in the other one it was not possible to demonstrate the fungus. Invasion of the central nervous system has been very rarely encountered in this condition. It is nevertheless possible that such an involvement is much more frequent than we gather from previous reports.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Two new cases of Lobo's disease are reported. The condition has been rarely found in Colombia and in non-amazonic countries. Its clinical, histopathologic and mycologic characteristics (localized dermatosis, torpid granuloma with marked histiocytic reaction, impossibility for inoculation to animals, great difficulty for culturing), indicate that Lobo's disease is an independent entity and not a variant of South American Blastomycosis. Certain aspects of its pathogenesis (transmission, dissemination) are not well known, although trauma and autoinoculation are considered important factors.

Notes: An attempt is made to explain the differently shaped bubbles observed growing on a surface during nucleate boiling of water. Some of the bubbles photographed were very close to the spherical shape, while others were close to the hemispherical. Also, a number of bubbles had intermediate shapes and were called oblate bubbles.Measurements of bubble dimensions and growth rates obtained from high-speed films were analyzed. By using a modified Rayleigh equation, the relative importance of the inertial and surface tension forces was computed. it appeared that the differences in shapes among bubbles can be explained on the basis of the relative importance of these forces. It was found that for spherical bubbles inertial forces are small because of the slow growth rate and surface tension is clearly the dominant force. For hemispherical bubbles, however, the fast growth rate causes a very large inertial force which is greater than surface tension. For the oblate bubbles neither of the forces was found to be dominate and inertia as well as surface tension determines the shape.
