Summary The transovarial (vertical) transmission ofRickettsiella melolonthae (Krieg) Philip by infected lamellicorn beetles (Melolontha spp.,Amphimallon sp., ect.) had to be regarded as highly probable according to biological, ecological, and histological investigations. It could be demonstrated inAmphimallon solstitiale (L.): third-stage larvae of this species were infected with rickettsiae just before pupation and produced adults that were infected too but still able to mate and oviposite. Their offspring died mainly as young larvae, few as old ones or pupae. Only three gave adults. All dead stages as well as the adults showed the rickettsiosis. It was present in one third of the dead larvae, two third of the dead pupae and in all of the beetles.
Notes:
