Notes:
Summary According to the hypothesis that loose loops may be incorporated in sharp folds on the surface of polyethylene single crystals depending on crystallization conditions, the density measurements were repeated by a pycnometer method similar to that reported previously [Kawai andKeller, Phil. Mag.8, 1203 (1963)] for the single crystals of carefully fractionated polyethylenes of different molecular weights. The densities were measured also as functions of polymer concentration, crystallization temperature and solvents used. Nearly all the samples gave figures very near the crystallographic density 1.00 in agreement with the previous results. However, the highest molecular weight fraction (¯M v =150,000) studied gave a somewhat lower value. This is consistent not only with the above hypothesis but also with the observation made by electron microscopy that this fraction no longer gives such single crystals with well defined prism faces and sectors as observed for all the other fractions. The dependencies of the density upon concentration, crystallization temperature and solvents used could not be found within the accuracy of the measurements. Infra-red analysis based on the method proposed byKoenig andWitenhafer on the other hand, revealed a systematic change of the ratio of the absorption of two bands assigned to gauche methylene units with molecular weight and concentration of the polymer, in agreement with the above hypothesis. Making use of the technique developed byPalmer andCobbold, in which lamellar crystals were extracted after treating bulk polyethylene by fumic nitric acid, moreover, the disordered region i. e., the folds of the single crystals, was eliminated. The number of carbon atoms involved in the folds was thus estimated from weight-losses and molecular weights measured after the treatment, combining with the X-ray long spacings of the original crystals and chemical analysis of the elements involved in the remaining crystals. Although this method overestimates the fraction of surface layer, the results reveal that the crystallinity of the single crystals should be higher than 90%. All the above results seem to support the sharp fold model. However, it is likely that very few number of loose loops are superimposed in the more regular folded surface, depending on crystallization conditions and molecular weight of the polymer.
