Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
An HCl, H2, carbon gas electrode has been used for activity measurements of FeCl2 in molten mixtures with CaCl2, KCl and KCl + CaCl2.The system FeCl2—CaCl2 shows nearly ideal behaviour. In FeCl2—KCl mixtures the strong negative deviation from ideality is in agreement with a formation of FeCl-24 complexes in the KCl rich part of the system.ΔG° for the complex formation reaction is evaluated to -13.7 kcal at 1000 °K.In the ternary system FeCl2—KCl—CaCl2, at a constant mol fraction of FeCl2, log aFeCl2 varies linearly with the equivalent fraction of Ca++ of the CaCl2 and KCl components in the melt.
