Description / Table of Contents:
Native glycogen from rat liver was isolated by extraction with aqueous HgCl2-solutions followed by purification with gelpermeation and ion exchange chromatography. The evaluation of light scattering measurements from a ZIMM-plot and its logarithmic modification shows spherelike particles with an average diameter of dLS ≍ 1700 Å, and a particle weight of Mw ≍ 300·106. Electron microscopy agreed well with respect to shape and diameter of the heavy α-particles. The frequency distribution of the particle diameter exhibits two pronounced peaks at d = 1500 and d = 325 Å, respectively. These two peaks are related to DROCHMANS' α- and β-particles. The mass distribution, as calculated from the frequency distribution exhibits only one dominant peak. This is due to the fact, that the heavy particles are taken with a higher statistical weight in the mass distribution than in the corresponding frequency distribution.
Notes:
