Notes: A sizeable body of information has accumulated which indicates that waste disposal concentrations which merely permit survival of aquatic organisms may not permit them to function properly. Aquatic resource management groups and fisheries personnel are beginning to realize that temporary survival of fish and other aquatic organisms is really meaningless if they have aberrant behavior patterns, fail to reproduce, have poor growth rates, or are not able to function properly in other respects. However, most means of assessing sublethal effects require chronic exposures to the test material and use techniques that often require considerable expenditures for equipment, space, and personnel. In addition it is frequently desirable to have some quick assessment of the biological effects of various compounds before embarking on lengthy tests to determine whether the possibility exists of functional damage when fish undergo prolonged exposure to sublethal concentrations. The apparatus described in this paper furnishes a quick, relatively inexpensive assessment of the movement patterns of fishes and the suggestion is made that changes in activity may reflect deeper physiological stress.

Notes: Summary The distribution of fresh-water protozoan species on an artificial uniform substrate was studied in plastic troughs with continuous flow of unfiltered lake water. Ten areas were sampled at the same time in each trough and the diversity of species per area determined. Estimates were made of the density as well, but since some species were too delicate to preserve without destroying certain taxonomic characters the primary emphasis was placed on the diversity of species. No patterns were evident which suggested anything other than a random distribution of both species and individuals within each system. The situation appears conceptually similar to that originally pointed out by G. Evelyn Hutchinson in ‘The Paradox of the Plankton’ in which he notes the difficulty of applying the niche concept to the multi-specific association of autotrophic phytoplankton in the freely circulating upper waters of lakes and oceans.

Notes: Abstract Four high-water and six low-water limnological surveys of a portion of the Potomac River were made from 1956 to 1965; samples were collected at three stations on each survey to determine the effects of operation of the PEPCO Dickerson Power Station on the aquatic biota. Cluster analyses were made of various combinations of Jaccard coefficients relating 46 aggregations of 647 protozoan species. Similarities of aggregations of species within a survey were nearly always greater than similarities among aggregations from different surveys, indicating linear or along-stream environmental influences. Within-survey similarities for the early and late surveys were usually higher than similarities within middle-year surveys, a possible indication of environmental change at all stations, including the control, and subsequent biotic readjustment. Clustering of the 1956 aggregations, taken under high-water conditions before plant operations began, with aggregations from other surveys for any one station indicate that 1956 may have been different from other survey years. One explanation is that increased urbanization upstream from the power station after 1956 caused some environmental change. No changes in aquatic biota could be attributed to thermal pollution as a direct result of operation of the electric power generating station.

Notes: Summary Limnological surveys of a portion of the Potomac River were made from 1956 to 1965 to determine the effects of operation of the PEPCO Dickerson Power Station on the aquatic biota. Samples were collected at three stations on each of four high-water and six-low-water surveys. Cluster analyses were made of various combinations of Jaccard coefficients relating 50 aggregations of 370 insect species. Similarities of aggregations of species with a survey were in all cases greater than similarities among aggregations from different surveys, indicating relatively strong within-year or along-stream environmental influences. Clusters of aggregations from middle-year survey show a greater similarity to each other than to the earlier or later surveys. This may indicate environmental change at all stations, including the control. The marked dissimilarity of aggregations from the last survey to all others suggests biotic change in the river. One explanation is that increased urbanization upstream from the power station after 1956 caused some environmental change. No changes in aquatic biota can be attributed to thermal loading as a direct result of operation of the electric power generating station. The clustering method used provides a convenient quantitative analysis of limnological survey data and a comparison of environmental information derived from the study of distribution and ocurrence of different groups or organisms. The significance of this is that similarities and differences between communities can be expressed numerically and similar communities will cluster. If the control station clusters with the stations receiving heated waste water this indicates that no significant biological changes were caused by the waste heat.

Notes: Ever since the structure of DNA was made clear by Watson and Crick and their guess about the general mechanism of DNA replication shown to be correct by Meselson and Stahl, there has been great uncertainty about the mechanics of the process that expeditiously separates the two strands of the double helix during DNA replication. These uncertainties are most acute in the case of the bacterial chromosome, because it is apparently both the longest DNA molecule known (and therefore the one most subject to mechanical problems) and, in terms of nucleotides per second, the most rapidly replicated. Nevertheless, there are some facts that bear upon the mechanical aspects of DNA replication in bacteria (and elsewhere), and these are reviewed in this article.
