Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The facies development of the Jurassic in the subbetic realm of Spain shows many common features on the whole in spite of differences in detail. “Neritic limestone facies“ may be distinguished from “Nodular limestone facies“ and “Limestone-marl-facies“. This paper deals with the stratigraphie range of red nodular limestones and “Limonite Crusts“ as equivalents of the celtiberic “Boundary Oolites“. The occurrence ofNucleata, Pygope andPosidonia in the Subbetic is discussed. There are certain facies relations to the Jurassic of the adjacent celtiberic area and especially to the Jurassic of the Western and Southern Alps.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The formation of benzotropolone compounds from catechol and pyrogallol derivatives depends upon the type, size, and position of the substituents in the reactants. Electrophilic substituents can be installed only in the 5-position of pyrogallol without loosing the capability of forming benzotropolones. This behavior is explained by the symmetrical electronic structure of the anion acting as 1.3-dipole. Pyrogallols, substituted in the 4- and 6-position by either methyl-, ethyl- or phenyl-groups, yield benzotropolones with 3-methoxy-o-benzoquinone. Isopropyl- andtert. butyl-groups in the same positions hinder benzotropolone formation because of steric hindrance. It was attempted to clarify the effect of the factors on the reaction mechanism by analysis of mixtures of benzotropolones, formed by oxidative coupling of catechol derivatives with pyrogallol-derivatives. On account of deficient yields this could not be done.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mittels vergleichender Untersuchungen und Blockierungs-bzw.
Notes: Summary The reactive range of the acid anhydride reaction and the carbodiimide reaction for the histochemical demonstration of carboxyl groups was investigated by comparative methods, blocking tests and analytical methods. The carbodiimide reaction reveals COOH-groups of proteins and several sialinic acid carbohydrates. The additional demonstration of acid carbohydrates distinguishes the carbodiimide reaction from the acid anhydride reaction. The influence of fixatives on the outcome of the carbodiimide reaction is also investigated.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Rabbits have been exposed to single cutaneous infections with small, moderate or heavy doses of filariforme larvae of Strongyloides papillosus. Comparative studies were made on various clinical symptoms during the prepatent and patent periods, or until death occured. Rabbits could be successfully immunized by multiple infections with small numbers of infective larvae and by multiple injections of vaccine. Development of immunity was proved by comparison of the clinical symptoms occuring after heavy challenging infections with those after heavy single infections. Specific antibodies could be demonstrated by several serological methods.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Results of vaccination with X-irradiated third stage Strongyloides papillosus larvae in rabbits are presented. Under the experimental conditions described significant resistance was observed in male rabbits (Chinchilla) following a previous massive (40,000 La III) single percutaneous exposure to irradiated larvae. The levels to which larvae were exposed (for attenuation) were 25, 50, 75 and 100 Kr respectively. Resistance induced was sufficiently powerful to protect all of the vaccinated rabbits (age at vaccination: 9–10 weeks) from an otherwise lethal challenge (65. d. p. i.) with normal filariforme larvae (65,000 La III). The most significant reduction in challenge worm establishment was observed in rabbits vaccinated with 50 Kr irradiated larvae. Control animals were severely affected (loss of body weight, diarrhoea, lack of appetite, apathy, decreased erythrocyte values etc.) until death occurred. — Vaccination by a single small (1/3 LD) or moderate (1/2 LD) dose of normal larvae did not protect rabbits against challenge infection. X-irradiation of third stage larvae reduced infectivity varying with the amount of irradiation as measured by intestinal establishment of adult worms. Infection with X-irradiated larvae did not cause acute strongyloidiasis.
Tag p. i.) mit normalen Larven (65 000 La III) ohne merkbare Krankheitszeichen.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the present study the identification, purification and characterization of a precipitating „functional“ antigen from crude extract of adult Fasciola hepatica tissue are reported: Immunoelectrophoretic analysis of crude extract revealed 5–7 precipitates as identified with sera from experimentally infected rabbits. Two of these precipitating extract components formed heavy long trailing precipitate bands soon after infection. First precipitate formation developed using sera collected 2–3 weeks p.i. These two precipitates could be observed for now approximately 3 years p.i. One of these highly reactive precipitating extract elements was purified by means of gel filtration on Sephadex® G-75 columns and preparative polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis. Purified antigen seems to be homogenous as analysed in polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis, ultracentrifuge patterns, after electrofocusing procedure and in immunoelectrophoresis using rabbit crude extract hyperimmune sera, sera from experimentally infected rabbits and homologous antisera from mice after repeated booster injections of purified antigen. Molecular weight of antigen is estimated 8,0–22,1 · 103 as determined by Sephadex® G-75 (fine) column gel diffusion technique by comparison with human serum albumin, trypsin and ribonuclease and sedimentation during ultracentrifugation (s 20 w℞ 1,1), respectively (Pedersen, 1945). Absorption maximum was found at 260 nm. The purified protein antigen was found to contain ℞ 6% lipid. Microlipograms revealed the presence of esterified cholesterol (27,1%), triglyceride (24,6%), unknown steroide (5,6%), non esterified cholesterol (9,4%), monoglyceride (11,2%) and free fatty acids (21,6%). No phospholipids and esterified fatty acids could be detected. Qualitative and quantitative amino acid analysis of HCl-hydrolysates were carried out: ornithine (0,74 per cent amino acid per mg antigen), lysine (10,7%), histidine (3,24%), arginine (3,36%), aspartic acid (7,63%), threonine (4,76%), serine (4,24%), glutamic acid (12,24%), proline (20,14%), glycine (3,76%), alanine (4,76%), valine (6,84%), methionine (2,31%), isoleucine (3,86%), leucine (5,25%), tyrosine (2,44%) and phenylalanine (3,68%). The antigen may have some protein-bound carbohydrate as indicated by positive PAS-reaction in polyacrylamide gel. Immunodiffusion of antigen and rabbit hyperimmune serum from adult Fasciola gigantica visualized one precipitate. No precipitate developed using hyperimmune sera from adult Schistosoma mansoni, S. japonicum, Paragonimus westermani, P. myasakii, P. ohirai, Clonorchis sinensis and Dicrocoelium dendriticum. The purified antigen seems to be specific fluke material.
