Notes: As one in a series of studies relating the rheological behavior of mechanical mixtures of two polymer components to the degree of mixing, the tensile stress relaxation behavior of a graft copolymer of poly(vinyl acetate) with styrene, obtained by 60Co γ-irradiation of poly(vinyl acetate) in styrene solution and extraction of homopolymers, was investigated as a function of the fraction of styrene component and compared with that of a mechanical mixture of poly(vinyl acetate) with polystyrene, one of the typical combinations of incompatible components. The results obtained may classify the graft copolymer as a sort of mechanical mixture giving stable mixing even for incompatible components.

Notes: The diffusion constants of an acidic dye (Xylene Fast Blue P) into nylon 6 monofilaments of various draw ratios have been measured at several temperatures by measuring the distance of dye penetration into the cross-sections of the sample. The results are as follows. The diffusion coefficient of dye increases, reaches a maximum at a draw ratio near 1.6, and then decreases as the draw ratio increases. The activation energy of dye diffusion obtained from the temperature dependence of dye diffusion coefficient remains nearly constant in the initial and middle stages of drawing and increases above a draw ratio of about 3, as the draw ratio increases. The change in the polymer structure during drawing is discussed on the basis of these results.

Notes: As one in a series of studies relating the rheological properties of mechanical mixtures of two polymer components to the degree of mixing, the temperature dependence of tensile stress relaxation behavior of two types of mixed systems, i.e., poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(vinyl acetate) system and lightly crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate-poly(vinyl acetate)) system, was investigated over a temperature range covering the glass transition temperatures of both polymer components. The time-temperature superposition procedure was carried out for comparison of several parameters, such as fractional free volume and its thermal expansion coefficient, which were determined on the basis of the free volume concept from the viscosity in relation to the William-Landel-Ferry equation, with those of the individual polymer components. Although the fractional free volume and its thermal expansion coefficient thus determined for the mixed systems were apparent values, the results may, at least qualitatively, deny the simple additivity of the free volumes of the two-polymer mixed phases and suggest the existence of a sort of physical interaction between the phases, i.e., the internal pressure induced by one phase or the other due to a difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the phases.

Notes: The longitudinal dimensional change of dried nylon 6 monofilaments of various draw ratios swollen in the atmosphere of 24°C. and 100% R.H. was studied. The degree of longitudinal swelling in equilibrium changes with the conditions of drawing and the draw ratio of the sample; for the samples drawn immediately after spinning, it increases, passes through a maximum near a draw ratio of 2, and gradually decreases as the draw ratio increases; for the samples drawn many days after spinning the maximum point is at a draw ratio near 2.8, while for the samples drawn after heat-treatment the degree of longitudinal swelling does not change appreciably with the draw ratio of the sample. The rate of longitudinal swelling remains nearly constant or increases slightly in the range of draw ratios of 1-3. It then decreases with the draw ratio at draw ratios higher than 3.

Notes: In the course of structural study of aliphatic polyesters, the crystal structure of polyglycolide, the simplest polyester of the type —[—(CH2)z—CO—O—]n was determined by interpretation of the X-ray diffraction patterns of the fibers. The crystallographic data are: a = 5.22 Å, b = 6.19 Å, c (fiber axis) = 7.02 Å, the orthorhombic spacegroup, Pcmn-D2h16. Two molecular chains pass through the unit cell. The crystal structure was determined by the help of two dimensional and three dimensional FOURIER syntheses. The planar zig-zag chain molecules form a sheet structure parallel to the ac plane and have not the polyethylene type arrangement. High density of the crystallite, 1.69 g/cm3, namely the tight molecular packing and the close approach of the ester groups might stabilize the crystal lattice and contribute to the high melting point of this polymer.

Notes: The low temperature solution polymerization of aromatic bisamidoximes and aromatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides was studied. Fully aromatic polyetherpoly-O-acylamidoximes of high molecular weight were obtained, which were transformed into thermally Stable aromatic polyetherpoly-1.2.4-oxadiazoles by thermal cyclodehydration. As a new monomer, diphenylether-4.4′-dicarboxylic acid chloride was, prepared. The solubility of copolymers of poly-O-acylamidoximes with the ether linkages along the polymer chain was found to be remarkably improved compared with the corresponding, aromatic poly-O-acylamidoximes. The conditions of the cyclopolycondensation reaction and the characterizations of the resulting polymers are described.
