    Notes: Carbon dioxide was desorbed from water in a packed column mounted on a large centrifuge. By varying the centrifuge rotational speed, the total body force acting upon the liquid was varied from 1 to 6.4 times the normal gravitational force. The results, obtained for ¾ in. Rasching ring packing, showed kLa varying with the body force to a power between 0.41 and 0.48, the exponent being larger at lower liquid flow rates. This effect of gravity is compared with penetration theory predictions and with those inferred from dimensional analysis and the effect of packing size.

    Notes: The horizontal rotating cylinder blood oxygenator has been developed to minimize shear, eliminate bubbles, reduce holdup, and provide for rapid change of the controlled temperature of the blood.To aid in the development of this apparatus a detailed mathematical model was formulated. A simplified model was also developed which yielded an analytical expression relating the amount of material transferred between the gas and liquid in the apparatus to operating variables. In developing these models an attempt was made to include a realistic mechanism for oxygen absorption in blood.Preliminary experiments were carried out by absorbing carbon dioxide into distilled water in the horizontal rotating cylinder. These preliminary results were found to be in good agreement with previous theoretical predictions and calculations that indicated that the equipment should be adequate to act as a lung substitute for a dog. When it was employed in this manner during open-heart surgery, insufficient oxygen was transferred to support the dog.It is concluded that the most probable reason for failure of the horizontal cylinder to act satisfactorily as a blood oxygenator is poor mixing in the blood pool.

    Notes: Isothermal pressure elevation can sometimes cause liquid-liquid phase separation of binary liquid mixtures. A quantitative thermodynamic analysis of this effect is made and applied to the system acetone-carbon disulfide at 0°C. with the use of available P-V-T-X data and vapor pressure data at low pressure. Visual observations of the phase separations at pressures up to 80,000 lb./sq.in. were used to compare with the results of the thermodynamic analysis.

    Notes: A study of the motion of the interface in two-phase flow in two dimensions with gravity force parallel to the plane of motion is described. The experiments were run in a porous medium analog, the Hele-Shaw model. A modification of the Saffman-Taylor solution is compared with the experimental results. The arbitrary parameter in the solution, measured in the experiments, does not approach an asymptote but is a function of the ratio of plate spacing to channel height. In the course of the air-water experiments three forms of the interface were observed before turbulence, which indicate regime changes in the flow. Finally, the effects of heterogeneities (change in plate spacing) on the interface were observed.

    Notes: Expressions are derived for an effective wall heat transfer coefficient useful in one-dimensional representations of heat transport in packed beds. These expressions are obtained with two mathematical models of a cylindrical packed bed: a partial differential model and a finite stage model. These expressions relate the effective wall heat transfer coefficient, which is a local coefficient, to the actual wall heat transfer coefficient and the bed diameter (and the radial Peclet number in the partial differential model) in regions of the bed where similar temperature profiles obtain. These relations involve a single dominant root of an equation characteristic of the heat balance equations of each model.From these relations, expressions for an effetive thermal resistance of the bed are obtained. For each model, this bed resistance is found to be an approximately linear function of the bed diameter and to be rather insensitive to the actual wall heat transfer coefficient. For each model, an approximate bed resistance is found that is not dependent upon the actual wall heat transfer coeficient and with which the effective wall heat transfer coefficient can be estiamted with an error of less than 7%.

    Notes: This report presents more extensive experimental vapor-liquid equilibria data for the helium methane system than are found in the literature. A static sampling technique was used to obtain vapor and liquid compositions for six temperatures between -180° and -85°C. and pressures up to 2,000 lb./sq.in.abs. Data at 2,000 lb./sq.in.abs. were extended to the critical temperature of the mixture.Average scatter of the data from the smoothed lines is approximately 1% of the helium concentration or 0.03 mole % helium, whichever is larger. Vapor compositions at -140°, -160°, and -180°C. were analyzed by a different technique and scattered on the average from the smoothed curve less than 4% of the methane concentration. Comparisons are drawn between the data of this study and the previously published work of Kharakhorin. The solubility of helium in liquid methane was found to be considerably less than the values indicated by Kharakhorin.Experimental data are presented in tabular form and in various phase composition diagrams. The behavior of the helium-methane system is seen to be very similar to that of the helium-nitrogen system, with helium being much less soluble in methane than in nitrogen.The data were satisfactorily represented by means of the Krichevsky-Kazarnovsky equation. Extrapolations to higher pressures should be feasible.

    Notes: The rate of attrition of a catalyst sample, of a single particle size, can be expressed by a simple function of initial diameter and time. The initial rate is a function of initial diameter, whereas the decrease in attrition rate of a catalyst of a given size as it ages depends only on time.The attrition equation for a single size of particles is introduced into the particle size distribution function and, through mathematical analyses, yields a relationship for the attrition of a full size-range catalyst. The form of this relationship, which includes terms for attritability and severity of attrition conditions, is verified by laboratory and commercial attrition data on two full-range catalysts. The size distribution of an attrited sample is not expressible in simple analytical form, but is readily obtained by numerical analysis.

    Notes: The change in volume on mixing for a system showing large positive deviations from ideality is examined at one temperature to pressures of 100,000 lb./sq.in. Original atmospheric pressure density data and compression measurements over the entire mole fraction range for this system, acetone-carbon disulfide, are reported at 0°C. These are correlated with the semiempirical Tait equation to yield change in volume on mixing as a function of mole fraction and pressure.This volume change is found to decrease from the maximum of 1 cc./mole at atmospheric pressure to about 0.4 cc./mole at 100,000 lb./sq.in. The maximum also shifts during this pressure increase from 0.53 mole fraction acetone to 0.74.

    Notes: The distribution across a pipe of turbulent intensities, shearing stress, and energy spectra are inferred from measured electrokinetic-potential fluctuations in a fully developed flow of distilled water in a 2.54-cm. diameter glass pipe. These quantities are shown to be in good agreement with those obtained by Laufer and Sandborn with hot-wire anemometers for air flows at the same mean Reynolds number. A tentative analytical model of the phenomenon is constructed and analyzed by Maxwell's electrodynamic field equations for a nonmagnetized medium moving with a velocity which is much smaller than the velocity of light. A set of equations governing the interrelation between the electrokinetic-potential fluctuations and the turbulent velocity-fluctuation components of the flow field in fully developed pipe flow is deduced. Fourier transforms are then introduced and simple relations between the electrokinetic-potential fluctuations and velocity fluctuations are obtained.
