    Notes: A new method for numerical solution of boundary-layer problems has greater applicability as well as greater speed and accuracy than the several previously proposed methods. The method uses the Goertler-transformed equations and a nonlinear finite-difference procedure. In most earlier work on difference methods the equations have been linearized at each step parallel to the boundary. The method of treatment of the boundary conditions on the equation of change for energy or mass transfer is shown to have an important influence on accuracy, and a new, more accurate method of treating boundary conditions involving the normal derivative is presented.Typical complete solutions are compared with the several methods. The solutions include both similar and more general flows up to separation, as well as coupling between the momentum and energy-balance equations.

    Notes: A technique has been developed for finding quantitative regions of asymptotic stability for nonlinear systems by using a known proof of the theorem which substantiates the linearization. In a sense, the method defines a region in which the first-order approximation is dominant from the point of view of stability. While the computations necessary can be somewhat involved, the procedure is essentially identical in all situations, and once established, can easily be used for a vast class of autonomous systems. The practical problems of both reversible and irreversible chemical reactions occuring in a continuous flow stirred vessel have been analyzed. Stability regions were obtained which are sufficiently extensive to be practical from the process viewpoint.

    Notes: A previous paper introduced the pair-type-probability (PTP) function for use in molecular corresponding states theory. The present paper develops the predictive equations of Scatchard and Hildebrand and the correlation equations of Wohl from particular pair and triplet weighting functions for clusters of two and three molecules in a liquid mixture. The cluster-weighting idea therefore unifies the major prediction and correlation schemes now in engineering use.

    Notes: There are four points of flexibility in present molecular formulations of the corresponding states idea. At these points the procedure followed or the numerical values can be tailored to achieve better agreement between predicted and experimental properties without violation of physical principles. These flexibilities are the exponent values used in the pair-potential function, the averaging procedure used to obtain an effective mixture pair-potential function, the combination rule for unlike-pair parameters, and the selection of a reference substance. The first two flexibilities are used in this paper to show that the conformal-parameter equations can correlate excess free energy and activity coefficient data of highly nonideal liquid mixtures. A pair-type-probability function is introduced in the averaging procedure used to obtain a mixture pair-potential function. Any macroscopic or molecular property may be used in this weighting function to improve mixture-property prediction.

    Notes: The motion of a single rigid sphere entrained in a glycerine-water solution flowing downward through a cylindrical tube has been investigated throughout a range of particle Reynolds numbers of 6.0 to 120.0, tube Reynolds numbers of 208 to 890, and particle-to-tube diameter ratios of 0.120 to 0.190. Trajectories of the sphere, calculated for various particle Reynolds numbers by using the Rubinow-Keller expression for the transverse force, were found to agree satisfactorily with experimentally determined trajectories when the particle Reynolds number was below 40.0. In all cases the sphere was observed to migrate to the axis of the tube. At the lower particle Reynolds numbers the sphere approached the axis asymptotically, whereas at the higher particle Reynolds numbers the sphere oscillated across the axis of the tube one or more times during migration. All observations were made with spheres which were less dense than the fluid, the density difference being as high as 10% of the fluid density.

    Notes: The notion of optimality with regard to transient control is critically examined with a particular view toward the computational difficulties of solving the optimal control problem, and the arbitrary aspects of the usual objective functions. Realizing a need for effective approximations, a criterion for transient control is developed which requires a minimum of computational effort to apply in practice. Optimality is achieved in an instantaneous sense, and it is argued that overall optimality is well approximated for many cases of practical interest. To demonstrate its use, the criterion is applied to the transient control of a stirred-tank reactor. Numerical examples are given and the results are discussed and compared with those obtained by alternative methods.

    Notes: A graphical method of analysis is presented for studying the practical stability and ultimate boundeness of autonomous second-order systems. It is argued that these measures of stability are in many cases more germane to design than Liapunov stability. The method incorporates much of the geometric character of a Liapunov analysis, but it is shown that a Liapunov function, relatively difficult to obtain, can be replaced by a set of easily postulated scalar functions which collectively yield the required stability information. Examples are given which demonstrate the use and effectiveness of the method.
