Notes: The practical importance of tungsten monocarbide prompted an investigation into its wear mechanism. Initial studies on ball-milled tungsten carbide powders revealed considerable plastic deformation, coupled with a reduction in crystallite size. Deformation stacking faults, involving slip on the basal plane, were observed. The work was extended to sintered blocks, tool tips and single crystals. Studies on the worn surfaces of these revealed plastic deformation that extended to a depth of a few microns below the surface. The plastic deformation is an important factor in the wear of tungsten carbide.

Notes: Conclusions In reality, entanglements based on rheological measurements have been essentially defined operationally as a kinetic or time delay effect present in concentrated polymer systems. This is where intuitively molecular loops or overlap and entanglements of polymer chains are most likely to occur. The evaluation in fig. 2 suggests that the theory of rubber elasticity, even discounting the inherent imprecision of measurements, gives anM e which is not relatable to polymer composition 1and chain structure. Conversely reliable and internally consistent values ofM c can come from the molecular weight dependence of: 1.Newtonian viscosities, 2.NMR relaxation times, and 3 the shear dependence of viscosities, see fig. 1. However, entanglement spacings calculated in this way lack adequate theoretical substantiation particularly as to the mechanism of flow. Nonetheless, the correlation ofM c with composition and structure is convincing and provides a sound empirical correlation and the basis for a renaissance in theoretical interpretation of viscoelastic behavior of linear amorphous polymers. Further theory must rationalize the fact that the shear compliance, which is proportional toM e , depends on a combination of molecular weight averages involvingZ andZ+1. Yet the break in viscosity-molecular weight curves yieldingM c has been generally confirmed to depend on only weight average molecular weight. The values ofM c appear worthy of further experimental and theoretical evaluation. The values ofM e appear to be based on experimental techniques that at present do not provide sufficient precision to warrant citation of such values molekular weight distribution is thought to have an important yet ill-defined influence on calculated values of M e .

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a new method for the calculation of the purity of organic, non-polymeric samples using the recorder trace from a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Perkin-Elmer Corp. The entire DSC recorder trace is employed rather than only the initial portion of the curve. The previous trial and error choice of energy lost by the DSC trace has been replaced by a definite numerical value. Meaningful purity values have been obtained from a single DSC trace on samples of from 95 to 99.9% purity. This new method has been demonstrated to provide more accurate and less ambiguous results than the manufacturer's procedure.

Notes: Summary By a combined light and electron microscopic study, the structure and behavior of the stress fibers of cultured rat embryo cells are described. From an analysis of movie records of living cells it is seen that the stress fibers are in a state of flux, continually altering their dimensions and dispositions within the cell. However, compared to most other cellular movements, these rates of change are slow. By electron microscopy it is shown that the stress fibers consist of bundles of close packed elongate 75 Å filaments, arranged just beneath the plasma membrane adjacent to the cell's plane of attachment and that similar filaments, forming a loose framework, permeate the cytoplasmic matrix. On the basis of careful light and electron microscopic comparisons, it is concluded that the filamentous structure shown within the cytoplasm of glutaraldehyde/osmium-fixed cells is a generally accurate representation of the structure of the living cell cytoplasm. It seems likely that the stress fibers are concerned in stabilizing areas of cellular attachment as well as with resisting forces that stretch the cell. The suggestion is made that, by controlling cytoplasmic viscosity and responding to cytoplasmic microtubules, the diffuse framework of filaments helps to determine the form of the cell and that, by a coordinate dynamic activity of its filaments, it provides the motive power for the various forms of cellular and intracellular movements.
