Notes: Summary Developing cilia and non-ciliated centrioles are both present in the rat choroid cell studied with the electron microscope. The development of the cilium begins with the appearance of a thick-walled vesicle close to the centriole or in contact with it. Very soon this vesicle lines the distal extremity of the centriole. The growing ciliary shaft invaginates the vesicle, forming a temporary ciliary sheath. This sheath isolates the growing cilium from its environment. Degenerating ciliary shafts are by no means rare. They are interpreted as evidence of a biological cycle of the cilia. Club-shaped forms are also frequent. Non-ciliated centrioles are sometimes in contact with striated structures consisting of alternating dark and light bands, separated by a distance of 600 Å. These formations (treillis) are different from the “pericentriolar satellites”. On morphological grounds, they might be considered as centriole precursors.

Notes: Abstract Previous derivations of the Stevens Power Law relating loudness to intensity assume, in addition to level invariance, that the relation must be analytic or at least differentiable. This last condition is replaced here by the weaker one of requiring only continuity.

Notes: Abstract It is an empirical finding that an allometric quantity with dimensional exponents α, β and γ relative to mass, length, and time, respectively, has a value for its allometric exponentb satisfying the relation $$\tfrac{1}{3}(3\alpha + \beta + {\gamma \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {\gamma 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}) \leqslant b \leqslant \tfrac{1}{3}(3\alpha + \beta + \gamma ).$$ A theoretical derivation is given of this double inequality using only the fact of constant density and the plausible assumption that metabolic rate is a dominant allometric quantity.

Notes: Abstract IfN(t) is the expected number of cells in a culture at timet, $$\dot N(t)$$ the corresponding time derivative, andf(t−τ)dt the probability that a cell of aget−τ at timet will divide in the succeeding time intervaldt, then according to Hirsch and Engelberg (this issue) there obtains the integral equation $$\dot N(t) = 2\int_{ - \infty }^t {f(t - \tau )\dot N(\tau )d\tau }$$ for describing the dynamics of the cell population. It is the purpose of this note to give two alternative derivations of this equation, one based on the age density equation of Von Foerster, and the other based on a generalized form of the Harris-Bellman equation describing the first moment of an age dependent, branching process. In addition, a probability model is posed from which the Von Foerster equation and, hence, the Hirsch-Engelberg equation readily follows.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The induced autolysis ofAspergillus flavus mycelium was studied. Mycelium ofA. flavus was obtained by growing this fungus in submerged cultures with aeration and mechanical agitation in fermentors at 24° C–25° C for 6 days. At that time culture fluid was discarded and the mycelium throughout washed in sterile conditions and suspended in distilled water. The induced autolysis ofAspergillus flavus mycelium was provoked by subjecting this suspension to a combined action of a flow of air (4 l/min) and mechanical agitation (150 rev/min) for a variable length of time. In these conditions a degree of autolysis amounting to 73 %–79 % has been obtained. Estimation of ammonia evolved during this induced autolysis ofAspergillus flavus gave maximum values (10 mg/24 h/l of suspension) at the beginning of the process, that is, by the 4th–8th days of autolysis, decreasing sharply thereafter. From the 30th day on the amount of NH3 given off remained fairly constant around the value 1 mg/24 h/l of suspension.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A study is made on plant communities of stands that remain covered with snow almost all the year (Salicetea herbaceae) in the Central Pyrenes Mountains; they are compared with those of the Oriental Pyrenees and Occidental Alps. The author publishes 36 original relevées of 3 associations: Cardamino-Gnaphalietum supini, Anthelio-Salicetum herbaceae and Carici-Salicetum retusae. A floristical, ecological and chorological study of them is made. The phenomena of soils and vegetation zonation in the alpine range are emphasized.
