Notes: Abstract Conditions are derived for dynamically stabilizing the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a fluid interface and for attaining the corresponding dynamic equilibrium. These conditions could be proved in experiments using an aqueous solution of Potassium Jodide (ρ h=1.6 g/cm3) as the heavy fluid and oil (viscosity SAE 140,ρ ι =0.9 g/cm3) as the light one. Parametric resonances were suppressed, but could be observed using oil of lower viscosity.

Notes: Summary Detection of ribonucleases in polyacrylamide gels after disc-electrophoresis is possible by incubation of the gels in a solution of low molecular RNA followed by staining with methylene blue. Application of this method to protein extracts of wheat leaves, sugar beet leaves and roots of different bean varieties as well as callus cultures and roots of the same bean variety shows differences in number and position of RNase zones.

Notes: [Auszug] Circumstantial evidence has for long suggested2 that retinol is changed into an 'active form' in the course of its metabolic function. When the vitamin A-like activity of retinoic acid was discovered by Dowling and Wald3, this acid was at first considered to be the 'active form'. However, it could ...

Notes: Summary Histochemical and biochemical studies have demonstrated the occurrence of sialic acid in the Reissner's fibre of the ox. The content of sialic acid is about 3,2% related to dry substance. It is just possible that by cation-exchange the fibre balances the concentration of biogenic amines in the cerebrospinal fluid.

Notes: Abstract 32P administered to wheat plants for 2 h just before inoculation with stem rust, and extracted from the primary leaves 2 and 4 days later, was partly incorporated in highmolecular RNA; the specific activity of this fraction in rust-infected leaves was significantly higher than that in healthy leaves. When administered for 1 1/2 h 2 and 4 days after inoculation and extracted immediately thereafter, large amounts of32P were incorporated in a polyphosphate fraction; also in this case the specific activity of this fraction was significantly higher in rustinfected leaves than in healthy leaves. It could not be associated with a distinct RNA fraction, nor could short-living m-RNA be detected in other fractions.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of the right ventricular heart muscle of the rat was examined with special attention directed at the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Besides the conventional methods of electron microscopical investigation, the application of ferritin as a tracer and serial sectioning of tissues gave the following results: 1. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is composed of a system of transverse tubules (T-system), and of a system of longitudinal tubules (L-system). 2. The T-system is composed of branching tubules which form an anastomic network connected with extracellular space. The cell membrane (inner sarcolemma) is in direct continuity with the membranes of the T-tubules. The basement membrane (outer sarcolemma) extends into the depth of the cell, following the invaginations of the cell membrane. Numerous T-tubules have a longitudinal course over short stretches. 3. A communication may occasionally be demonstrated between the tubules of the T-system and tubules which appear to belong to the L-system. The limitations of the present methods of identification of tubules as belonging to the one or the other system are discussed. 4. No classical triads (such as found in skeletal muscle) could be demonstrated at the points of contact between the T-system and the L-system. Instead, formations were demonstrated which were characterised by the absence of membrane thickenings of synaptic type. For such formations the name of triadoid system is suggested. Ferritin can diffuse into the lateral cisternae of the triadoid system. 5. The T-system and the triadoid system put the mitochondria in close contact with the extracellular space. 6. Tubules of the sarcoplasmic reticulum open into the intercalated discs; the ferritin granules can be demonstrated in the intercellular space inspite of closure by desmosomal complexes and nexus formations. 7. Intermediate invaginations at the level of the M band were observed: they may conceivably be connected with the L-system. 8. The structure of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the subsarcolemmal regions was extensively discussed. 9. The significance of the various components of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the light of the physiologic properties of the heart muscle was discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: In the production of high molecular weight aromatic polyamides which are soluble in polar solvents, novel aromatic diamines with oxdiazole, triazole, thiadiazole, thiazole, hydantoin, quinazolone and quinazolinedione ring systems - some of the novel aromatic diamines contain ether or sulfone groups - are reacted with aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides (e.g. iso- or terephthaloyl dichloride) in polar organic solvents (e.g. N.N-dimethylacetamide or N-methyl-pyrrolidone).Filaments and fibres which possess a very good strength and a high thermal stability can be produced. Polyamides of diamines with quinazolinedione ring systems are most stable to high temperatures and are further distinguished by being only slightly liable to combustion. The new polyamides dissolved in polar solvents are suitable in the production of flexible films which are stable to high temperatures.
