Notizen: Moisture present in epoxy anhyride composites may hydrolyze the anhydride and cause major changes in the mechanical and chemical properties of the final composite. Heat distortion data and infrared spectroscopy are used to analyze the changes caused by the presence of the moisture. As the concentraton of water is increased, there is a decrease in the heat distortion or gass transition temperature. The decrease is due to a change in the crosslinking network and is caused by the reduction of the functonality of the epoxy group for acid as compared to the anhydride. Where rigid specifications must be met it is essential that the moisture level in the fillers, resins, etc. be kept constant.

Notizen: The flow-assisted degradation behavior of polystyrene was studied as a function of solvent, polymer concentration, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution. To obtain data at concentrations as low as 100 parts per million by weight, turbulent drag reduction measurements were used to augment the usual analytical techniques of viscosity and gel permeation chromatography. Turbulent flow measurements were found to be a valuable technique for evaluating the effects of degradation: the drag reduction onset point provides information about the largest molecules in the sample while the flow rate dependence is related to the shape of the top part of the molecular weight distribution. For the polymers and flow conditions studied, the degradation causes a shift in the distribution to lower molecular weights with little change in the shape. This suggests a complex mechanism where the probability of bond scission is not random but varies along the polymer backbone.

Notizen: Thermoplastic interpenetrating polymer networks, IPN's, are defined as combinations of two physically crosslinked polymers. A styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene (SEBS) triblock elastomer was combined with an ionomer prepared from a random copolymer of styrene, methacrylic acid, and isoprene (90/10/1 by volume), and subsequently neutralized. Two subclasses of the thermoplastic IPN's were identified. A sequential polymerization method yielded the chemically blended thermoplastic IPN's (CBT IPN's). Melt blending of the separately synthesized polymers produced the mechanically blended thermoplastic IPN's (MBT IPN's). Stress-strain and Rheovibron characterization revealed that the CBT IPN's exhibited greater tensile strength and higher elongation at break, but lower moduli than the MBT IPN materials of the same overall composition. Analysis of moduli data with the theories of Takayanagi, Davies, Budiansky, and Kerner disclosed more equal dual phase continuity for the MBT IPN's than the CBT IPN's at each composition. The low modulus of the more rubbery CBT IPN compositions was attributed to a decrease in the effective chain end-to-end distance between crosslinks in the elastomeric (EB) center block, brought about by the synthetic method.

Notizen: Recovery experiments above Tg have been performed on glass bead and short glass fiber polystyrene composite sheets obtained from extrusion and subsequent hot drawing. A shift procedure has been applied to recoil data using the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation with the same values of C1 and C2 used for unfilled polystyrene. The data reported show that an improvement of the dimensional stability of a drawn thermoplastic material can be obtained by adding very low volume percentage of fibers. Moreover, all the recoil data have been reduced to a unique generalized master curve which takes into account the draw ratio, the filler content, and geometry, using a fractional distance from equilibrium as a measure of the recovery. These results indicate that the presence of the filler does not affect the recoil kinetics of the polymeric matrix.

Notizen: Dextran-g-poly(acrylamide-co-sodium acrylates) were prepared by partial hydrolysis of dextran-g-poly(acrylamides) with controlled numbers and lengths of grafted chains. This hydrolysis route proved to be more effective than Ce(IV)-induced cografting of acrylamide and sodium acrylate comonomers onto dextran in producing the desired graft-copolymer structures. The resulting copolymers were characterized and the effects of composition, temperature, ionic strength, and shear rate on dilute solution rheological properties were studied.

Notizen: The problem of the migration of impurities from plastic containers has been analyzed, and the effect of the outward diffusion of the container contents on the impurity migration has been considered. The system of equations describing the coupled diffusion problem has been solved using finite-difference methods, and an analytical solution has been developed for the initial stages of the mass transfer process. It was found that the outward diffusion of the container contents can exhibit a large effect on the migration of impurity if the ratio of the diffusivity of the container contents to the diffusivity of the impurity exceeds 100. Sufficiently large values of this diffusivity ratio and of the impurity partition coefficient can minimize the buildup of undesirable impurities in the contents of a plastic container.

Notizen: Fiber spinning experiments were carried out with an α-methyl styrene/silicone block copolymer under various sets of spinning conditions. The behavior observed was very sensitive to the ambient axial temperature profile employed along the spinline and to the initial melt temperature at the die. By optimizing these parameters, very high draw ratios (〉400 to 1) could be achieved. Under less optimum conditions, filament rupture and instabilities such as draw resonance, accompanied by periodic diameter and spinline tension fluctuations, were noted. Tensile stress and axial velocity gradient profiles were obtained along the spinline under a variety of spinning conditions. These profiles, together with an independent: rheological characterization of the polymer, provide insights into the mechanisms giving rise to the various types of behavior observed.
