Notes: The C8H9+-ion, formed from the molecular ions of 2-phenyl-1-bromoethane, 1-phenyl-1-bromoethane and of 1-phenyl-1-nitroethane by loss of the bromine atom and of the nitro group, splits off a molecule of acetylene after an almost complete randomization of hydrogens, as proved by deuteration. An eight-membered ring structure for the C8H9+-ion is proposed to explain these results.By loss of the nitro group from the molecular ions of 1-phenyl-1-nitropropane and of 1-phenyl-2-nitropropane the well-known phenylated cyclopropane ion3 (C9H11)+ is generated. Mass spectra of analogues, specifically deuterated in the side-chain, show that in this ion a randomization of hydrogen atoms in the cyclopropane ring as well as a hydride transfer from the cyclopropane ring to the phenyl cation occur.

Notes: The utility of benzoyl and pentadeuterobenzoyl derivatives of peptide methyl esters for mass spectrometric analysis was investigated. The mass spectra of the glu-his and the val-tyr-pro derivatives are discussed. Treatment of the peptide methyl esters with the mixed benzoic-ethyl-carbonic anhydride did in some cases lead to benzoyl derivatives as well as to ethoxycarbonyl derivatives.

Notes: Mass spectra of 1-phenylethanol-1 and its analogues, specifically deuterated in the aliphatic chain, suggest that the [M—CH3]+ ion is represented partly by an α-hydroxybenzyl fragment. Moreover, the molecular ion loses successively - after scrambling of all hydrogen atoms, except those of CH3—a hydrogen atom and C6H6, generation the CH3CO+ ion.Diffuse peaks, found in the spectra of of 2-phenylethanol-1 and its analogues, specifically deuterated in the aliphatic chain and in the phenyl ring, show that the molecular ion loses C2H4O, possibly via a four-center mechanism, after an exchange of aromatic and hydroxylic hydrogens.Mass spectra of 1-phenylpropanol-2 and its analogues, specifically, deuterated in the aliphatic chain, demonstrate that in the molecular ion exclusively the hydroxyl hydrogen atom is transferred to one of the ortho-positions of the phenyl ring via a McLafferty rearrangement, generating the [M — C2H4O]+ ion. Furtherore, an eight-membered ring structure is proposed for the [M — CH3]+ ion to explain the loss of H2O and C2H2O from this ion after an extensive scrambling of hydrogen atoms.

Notes: The mass spectral fragmentations of the saturated five-, six- and seven-membered ring ethers have been determined by studying their site-specifically deuterated analogues by both high and low-resolution mass spectrometry. The initial processes, governing the fragmentations of the cyclic ethers are shown to be identical with the well-known processes of linear nonbranched ethers, i.e. predominant α-fisson in the lower members and predominant carbon-oxygen fisson with charge retention on the carbon atom in the higher members.

Notes: ---In comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography, two individual separations are coupled by means of a rotating thermal desorption modulator interface. The injection pulse introduced via the interface onto the second column should be as short as possible. Parameters affecting the modulator operation are studied. In the set-up used in this study, the temperature of the second column can be programmed independently from that of the first column. Optimization of the second-dimension separation to minimize peak broadening and maximize resolution is discussed and an elegant approach to determine second-dimension retention times using a non-constant modulation frequency is demonstrated. The high separation power of the comprehensive system is demonstrated by the analysis of technical and biota samples containing chlorinated biphenyls and toxaphene.

Notes: ---The potential of the on-line coupling of microcolumn liquid chromatography (μLC) using aqueous eluents with a flame ionization detector (FID) was evaluated. An eluent-jet interface was modified to allow the efficient introduction of the eluent into the FID. The potential of the method is demonstrated by the μLC-FID determination of lower alcohols and bis(2-hydroxyethylthio)alkanes on porous and non-porous stationary phases, respectively. Flow injection analysis (FIA)-FID experiments with highly polar, thermolabile, semi-volatile and non-volatile compounds like amino acids, organic acids, alkylphosphonic acids, and carbohydrates showed the developed configuration to be a promising approach for the detection of a wide range of analytes. Compared with a nebulization interface, the eluent-jet interface showed 4-10 times higher peaks for citric acid. Detection limits by FIA for all compounds were in the range of 0.2-5 ng injected. With ribose as test compound, plots of peak height vs. amount injected showed good linearity (r2 〉 0.999) in the range of 75-12,000 μg/mL. The repeatability showed relative standard deviations of less than 5%.
