    Notes: Abstract Electron induced desorption of hydrogen on polycrystalline platinum has been studied in continuation of former work. The results remain consistent with a supposed adsorption model implying that electron induced H+ emission is restricted to hydrogen adsorbed only at particular sites occupying not more than 1 per cent coverage. These sites are ascribed to characteristic and stable surface impurities which are not influenced by the improved target treatment applied. Depletion of sites by sputter cleaning is cancelled by recovery during annealing. The highest observed H+ yield (all available sites filled with hydrogen) is 2 · 10−5 ions per electron. The total cross section for desorption by electron impact is 2 · 10−17 cm2. Complex interaction phenomena between the electrons and the hydrogen covered platinum surface have been observed.

    Notes: Abscisic acid inhibited the rate of 14CO2 fixation in leaves of Pennisetum typhoides (Burm. f.) Stapf & Hubbard seedlings, but increased the activities of phosphoenol-pyruvate-carboxylase and malic enzyme. The leaves of the seedlings grown in the presence of abscisic acid incorporated, in comparison to the control, more radioactivity in the fraction of organic acids, but less radioactivity was recorded in the amino acid fraction. On the other hand, gibberellic acid which also inhibits photosynthetic 14CO2 assimilation and decreases the activities of photosynthetic enzymes, favours greater incorporation in alanine, and reduces that in malate. It is deduced that bio-regulants can greatly influence the flow of 14C into individual photosynthetic products. As in growth, abscisic and gibberellic acids in combination tended to antagonize each other in their effects on enzyme activity as well as in incorporation of 14CO2 into photosynthetic products.

    Notes: Summary Peroxides can be detected on paper or thinlayer plates by application of a new reagent. All kinds of peroxides seem to be detectable. The sensitivity is about 1 μg.     Notes: Summary The effects of sodium chloride (NaCl) and abscisic acid (ABA) on protein synthesis, protein hydrolysis, glutamine synthetase, Δ-pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase and amino acid composition have been studied in aerial parts of Pennisetum typhoides (Stapf et Hubbard) seedlings. Whereas protein synthesis is inhibited by NaCl and ABA, the activity or the synthesis of leucine-arylamidase, glutamine synthetase and Δ-pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase is promoted by both the substances. The results of the amino acid analysis showed that in the presence of NaCl and ABA the amounts of alanine, aspartate and ammonia decreased, while the concentrations of glutamate, and especially that of proline increased greatly. The possible significance of the results in explaining the proline accumulation under stress conditions and ABA-treatment is discussed.

    Notes: Summary The separate and combined effects of sodium chloride and gibberellin (GA) on growth and the activities of alanine aminotransferase (GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (GOT) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) have been studied in the aerial parts of Pennisetum typhoides seedlings. Salt concentrations higher than 8.55×103 M inhibited growth and reduced GLDH activity, but strongly stimulated the activity of GPT and, to a lesser extent, that of GOT. GA alone, on the other hand, stimulated growth but did not affect activity of any of the enzymes tested. In combination with salt, however, GA tended to counteract the effect of salt on both growth and enzyme activity. The possible significance of the results in explaining adaptation of plants under conditions of stress has been discussed.

    Notes: Summary Photosynthetic characteristics of two important grasses of Indian desert have been studied. Pennisetum typhoides, an important cereal crop, known to have ‚Kranz’-type leaf anatomy and low CO2-compensation point, shows the C-4-dicarboxylic acid pathway for photosynthetic carbon reduction. Lasiurus sindicus, a promising forage grass, has also been shown to possess, for the first time, a typical ‚Kranz’-type leaf anatomy and a very similar CO2-fixation pattern like Pennisetum typhoides. It is remarkable that both species after short time exposure to 14CO2 show a high labelling not only in malate but also in alanine. This may be due to the activity of an aspartic acid decarboxylase.

    Notes: Summary Seedlings of Pennisetum typhoides were grown in sodium chloride (NaCl) and gibberellic acid (GA3) separately and in combination, and the effects on the activity of amylase, phosphorylase, aldolase, invertase, hexose-phosphateisomerase, sucrose-synthetase and sucrose-6-phosphate-synthetase were studied. Treatment of the seedlings with NaCl caused an inhibition of the activity of amylase and invertase in the leaf homogenate, but enhanced that of phosphorylase, aldolase, sucrose-synthetase and sucrose-6-phosphate-synthetase. GA3 alone, as observed earlier, promoted the activity of invertase but indicated no significant influence on the other enzymes tested. In combination with salt, however, GA3 tended to counteract, partially or wholly, the effect of NaCl on the activity of several enzymes tested. The possible significance of the similarities between the action of abscisic acid (ABA) and salinity in influencing growth and metabolism of plants during stress is discussed.

    Notes: Summary In connection with the problem of the well-known stability of statolith starch, some enzymes of starch metabolism have been investigated qualitatively in the root cap cells of Zea mays L. No activity of granule-bound UDPG- and ADPG-transglucosylase (EC 2.4.1.21) could be found. In the soluble enzyme fraction of the root cap cells, on the other hand, activities of phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1), sucrose synthetase (EC 2.4.1.13), UDPG-pyrophosphorylase (EC 2.7.7.9), α-Amylase (EC 3.2.11), Maltase (EC 3.2.1.20), and D-enzyme (EC 2.4.1.25) were clearly shown to be present. However, no measurable activities of ADPG-pyrophosphorylase, sucrose-6-phosphate-synthetase (EC 2.4.1.14) and UDPG-dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.22) could be found. It is concluded that the stability of statolith starch in the root cap cells is not caused by the lack of enzymes of starch metabolism, but perhaps by a dynamic equilibrium between the degradation and the synthesis of starch. The later could proceed by the activity of phosphorylase working in the direction of starch synthesis because of removal of the inorganic phosphate by phosphorylating mitochondria accumulating in the neighbourhood of the statolith amyloplasts.

    Notes: Abstract A method for quantitating individual PCB components as well as total PCB has been utilized in determining 2-compartment pharmacokinetic parameters of Aroclor 1254 after an i.v. dose in sheep and pigs. The resultant parameters show that PCB components are not eliminated from blood of these species at the same rates. The methods used provide a realistic means for assessing the time course of PCB in the living animal.
