Notes: Summary A model for a semi-crystalline polymer having a welldefined lamellar texture is considered in which the orientation of the lamellar planes, as deduced from lowangle X-ray diffraction studies, is taken into account. The moduli along the crystallographica-,b- andc-axis are calculated on the basis of interlamellar shear mechanism for a 60% crystalline polymer (LDPE) and compared with the experimental values. The broad agreement is shown to be reasonable.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung DerYoungs-Modul von HDPE-Fäden, kaltgestreckt in verschiedenem Ausmaß, wurde bestimmt.
Notes: Summary TheYoungs modulus of HDPE filaments cold-drawn to different extents has been determined. The orientation distribution of the crystallites, of the total molecules and of the amorphous regions have been quantitatively determined. Using a simple one-phase model to predict theYoungs moduli, it is shown that the modulus is related primarily to the average orientation of the molecules in the amorphous regions.

Notes: Chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) is known to have a higher softening temperature than conventional poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Its processability characteristics are, however, different; it has been reported that CPVC is more difficult to process. However, only limited information on the processability characteristics is available. This paper describes some studies of the flow behavior of CPVC melts in a capillary rheometer. The true melt viscosity and activation energy were determined between 190° and 210°C for a number of samples, and they appear to be related to the cohesive energy density of the samples. It was observed that melt fracture, i.e., gross distortion of the extrudate, occurs even at low shear rates in samples having a high chlorine content. This has been attributed to the relatively high pressures that have to be used, the pronounced non-Newtonian nature of the melt, and melt elasticity. It is postulated that melt elasticity could result from crosslinking at the site of the double bond which is known to be formed by dehydrochlorination.

Notes: On the basis of the measured activation energies for radical and HCl generation in four poly(vinyl chlorides) of controlled structures, an overall mechanism of degradation is proposed. The mechanism is a chain reaction involving a β-chloro elimination from a radical-containing polymer molecule. Molecules containing tertiary C—Cl bonds are shown to undergo a fast initiation. Those containing tertiary C—H bonds are also demonstrated to be highly unstable, but the instability is not associated with the initiation step.

Notes: A complete normal coordinate analysis, infrared absorption, and inelastic neutron scattering studies on α-glycylglycine are reported. A Urey-Bradley force field which is also valid for N-deuterated sample is obtained. Assignments in the low-frequency region are based on inelastic neutron spectrum obtained in one phonon and cubic approximation.

Notes: A normal coordinate analysis for cyclic tetra-L-alanine molecule is reported. A comparison of amide modes and other low-frequency vibrations sensitive to conformational changes is made with those in poly-L-alanine. Intramolecular coupling coefficients are calculated using perturbation treatment.

Notes: Using Wilson's GF-matrix method as modified by Higgs for infinite helical polymers, dispersion curves and the frequency distribution function have been calculated for poly-L-proline II chain. Infrared spectrum is obtained and a Urey-Bradley force field, which provides best fit with the observed frequencies, is evaluated. The result are discussed from the viewpoint of the conformational characteristics of forms I and II.

Notes: Dispersion curves and frequency distribution for poly-L-hydroxyproline (PLHP) chain were obtained using Wilson's GF matrix method as modified by Higgs. These are compared with those of poly-L-proline II and polyglycine II, which also have three-fold screw symmetry. Ring and skeletal modes characteristic of PLHP are identified and the assignments of observed infrared and Raman frequencies are reported. Urey-Bradley force constants were evaluated.
