Notes: [Auszug] SIX direct photographs of the total phase of the solar eclipse of March 7, 1970, were made at Sandbridge, Virginia (longitude 75.9161 W, latitude 36.6759 N, mid-totality 1836 UT), using an achromatic doublet of focal length 7.62 m and Eastman Kodak Tri-X orthochromatic sheet film. Notes: Abstract The energy scale of the Michigan OSO III soft X-ray ion chamber has been assessed by using realistic theoretical X-ray spectra. Multiplicative factors by which the data may be corrected are proposed. The factors are only slightly temperature-dependent. A test of the proposed energy scale indicates it is still somewhat uncertain.

Notes: Abstract Peak fluxes of flare-associated 8–12 Å X-ray bursts occur at or near the time of the maximum energy content of the soft X-ray source volume. The amplitudes of flare-associated bursts may thus be used as a measure of the energy deposited in the source volume by non-thermal electrons and other processes. In the mean, the soft X-ray burst amplitude is apparently independent of the occurrence of a type III event. This is interpreted to indicate that electrons accelerated by the type III process do not directly participate in establishing the soft X-ray source volume.

Notes: Abstract Minor Hα activity, consisting of small brightenings and small, surgelike spikes, was observed to take place above an active center at the solar limb in good time-association with small fluctuations in the soft X-ray background flux, suggesting that even small dynamical events seen optically are associated with coronal heating. The ratio of Hα flux to soft X-ray flux in some of the surges was approximately the same as the ratio already established for flares. The total energy dissipated by the events in a 24-hour period is estimated; it is approximately equivalent to that released by one flare of imp 1 per day.

Notes: Abstract Observations are presented of the Caii infrared triplet (8498 Å, 8542 Å, and 8662 Å) at three positions on the solar disk to make possible direct analyses of the lines and comparisons with theoretical computations. The source functions for the two strongest lines (8542 Å and 8662 Å) are equal at those heights corresponding to the wings of the lines (¦Δλ¦ 〉 0.4 Å) but not to those of the cores. We suggest that the apparent source function inequality in the cores is due to limb darkening caused by inhomogeneities in the chromosphere.

Notes: Abstract Soft X-ray (8–12 Å), optical and radio data are analyzed for times during which flares were inferred to have taken place just behind the Sun's limb (infra-limb flares). The analysis, together with the probable positions of the inferred flares, suggests that the soft X-ray source volume lies below the cm-λ radio source, and that the flare impulse or explosion may in some flares be located at an atmospheric level near 104 km altitude.

Notes: Abstract Soft solar X-rays in the wavelength interval 8–12 Å were observed from OSO III. The totality of the observations that were made between 9 March, 1967, and 18 May, 1968, is summarized graphically and compared to the course of solar activity as observed at other wavelengths, with particular emphasis upon visible activity.

Notes: Abstract The electron density in the cores of coronal polar plumes that is determined from observations will depend upon the assumed electron density distribution through the plume in a direction normal to its axis. Core electron densities obtained by Saito (1965) and by Newkirk and Harvey (1968) were derived using different assumed electron density profiles, and are not in agreement. We have re-discussed Saito's data using Newkirk and Harvey's electron density profile and find that the disagreement persists. Whether this indicates a true variation in electron density in plume cores cannot now be stated. Errors in the electron densities derived here may arise through errors in measuring the angles θ and α which enter into the analysis. While plausible variations in θ produce no appreciable errors in core electron density, plausible variations in α may introduce appreciable errors into the determinations of that quantity.

Notes: Abstract Spatial power spectral densities of velocities in plages were compared with velocity power spectra of the quiet photosphere. The comparison suggests that photospheric oscillations are not gravity waves.
