Summary The equations of motion averaged over the entire height of the atmosphere, in the (x, y, p, t)-system may be interpreted as equations determining the surface of the centres of gravity of the various columns of air with unit cross-section. The thermal stratification of the troposphere alone is not sufficient for the characterization of the state of the entire atmosphere by the physical parameter of the height of the centre of gravity of this air column, but one has to take into account the stratosphere, too. The mesosphere and the thermosphere do not play any role for the determination of the height of the centre of gravity of an air column.
Notes:
