Notes: Abstract In this paper, a two-person zero-sum discounted stochastic game with a finite state space is considered. The movement of the game from state to state is jointly controlled by the two players with a finite number of alternatives available to each player in each of the states. We present two convergent algorithms for arriving at minimax strategies for the players and the value of the game. The two algorithms are compared with respect to computational efficiency. Finally, a possible extension to nonzero sum stochastic game is suggested.

Description: An improved apparatus for obtaining short-range molecular potentials is described. The setup is a refined version of that used by Jordan-Amdur and by Leonas. The ion source is provided with a mass analyzing magnet, the capacitance manometer in the scattering cell is calibrated with a McCleod gauge, and the detection unit substitutes a Channeltron multiplier for the thermopile. The measured ground-state He-He potential for radii between 0.49 and 1.56 A is approximately V(r) = 215 x exp(-3.95r) eV, which is 25% higher than the earlier experiments. The result is supported by molecular orbital and statistical model calculations.

Notes: Molecular parameters of sodium amylose xanthate in 1N NaOH solution have been determined by means of light scattering and viscometry. The expansion factor, α, has been determined from the expression due to Orofino and Flory. The value of a of the Mark-Houwink relation, [η] = KMa, has been determined. The Stockmayer-Fixman relationship has been used to evaluate the unperturbed dimension of the chain. The effective bond length b, Kuhn-Kuhn equivalent chain segment length Am and the steric factor σ, i.e., the ratio of the unperturbed dimension to the dimension assuming free rotation of the chain \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$(\bar R_o^2 )_z ^{1/2} /(\bar R_f^2 )^{1/2}$\end{document} have also been determined. From these data, it is concluded that sodium amylose xanthate in 1N NaOH solution behaves as a loosely coiled molecule.

Notes: Sodium amylopectin xanthate, prepared by xanthation of potato amylopectin in alkaline medium, was fractionated and the fractions in 1M NaOH were characterized by viscometry and light scattering. The expansion factor α was determined from the expression due to Orofino and Flory. The value of a of the Mark-Houwink relation, [η] = KMa, was also determined. Its weight-average molecular weight, end-to-end distance, branching, and other parameters in alkali solution were also evaluated. From the data, it was concluded that the sodium amylopectin xanthate molecule had a polydisperse random-coil chain configuration in 1M NaOH and had no tendency to aggregate in this medium.
