Abstract The kinetics of an oxidation reaction resulting when aluminum is heated under an oxy-gas torch are reported. The oxidation products form a mossy structure analyzed to be mostly α-Al 2 O 3.The weight gain as a function of time obeys a time law of the form W=at+bt2.A model which assumes the surface area at which reaction takes place to increase with time is proposed to explain the time dependence.
