Description / Table of Contents: Summary Experiences in catching small lepidopterous species particular the European Pine Shoot Moth with different glues The utility of three different glues applied on transperent foil was examined by use of the sexualpheromon of the European Pine Shoot Moth. Common caterpillar glue and two synthetic products (A 4 L and LA 25 of Wichmann u. Kühn, Freckenhorst, Germany) were used. The product LA 25 achieved excellent results. Even under very different weather conditions it was full effective at least for seven days. The catching effect on other small insects should be examined.

Notes: Summary The attractive power of disparlure—the sex attractant of the gypsy moth (Lymantria/Porthetria dispar)—vs. four synthetic analogous epoxides was tested in 1972 in a pine forest near Heidelberg. With two levels of concentration in the traps (2 and 20 μg), a total of 1112 nun moths (Lymantria/Porthetria monacha) and 257 gypsy moths were caught in 9 experiments. Approximately equal percentages of the two species were caught with a given compound. Disparlure was by far the most effective attractant. The other substances were between three and twenty times less effective. These experiments support the assumption that disparlure is also at least part of the sexual attractant of the nun moth. In two additional experiments, moth captures by a series of increasing disparlure concentrations (2–100 μg/trap) were determined. The catches of both species increased nonlinearly with the bait concentration. The experiments are discussed with respect to new (unpublished) electrophysiological recordings from disparlure receptor cells in both species. Special attention is given to the supposed masking effect of the disparlure precursor (an olefin). This substance is ineffective as an attractant, but has been reported to reduce the attraction of gypsy moth males to disparlure or to live females. However, the olefin elicits excitatory reactions in the same type of receptor cell that responds to disparlure and the related epoxides. Furthermore, no masking of the electrophysiological response was observed with the receptor cells when the olefin was added to disparlure.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Caged females of Rhyacionia buoliana attract males only during a limited period in the early evening. Outside this time no flying males could be observed. 2. Even when abdominal extracts of females are offered during a period of 24 hours, flight activity of males occurs only between late afternoon and beginning darkness. 3. Males could be attracted by abdominal extracts before females released scent and before the general male flight started. 4. On clear evenings extracts placed on aisles attracted males later than those in plantations. This difference in timing is explained by differences in light intensity between the two areas.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Males ofRhyacionia buoliana turn to the light source in immovable air. They favoured the more intense light source (100 W=950 Lx; measured at the starting point) above lower intensities. 2. The males flew—rarely walked—in the wind tunnel independent from the intensity of the air stream (max. 1.5 m/sec) upwind in direction to the light source (15 W=58 Lx). 3. Was the air stream directed to the light source (15 W), then the moths started upwind and drifted passive to the light source. The behaviour was independent from the intensity of the airflow. 4. Light sources of the same illumination (15 W) offered on both sides of the tunnel stimulated the moths to stard upwind but immediately after starting they drifted downwind. 5. Light sources of different intensities (40 W resp. 100 W=305 Lx resp. 950 Lx) given at the same time, changed with increasing windspeed the approached flight of the moths from the luminous side to that with the poorer light source. 6. These results are discussed in respect to the departure of male moths in areas free of pines.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Kristalline B-Granula im Pankreas der Ringelnatter besitzen die Form von Rhombendodekaedern (a ≈ 11 nm, kubisch-raumzentriertes Gitter).
Notes: Summary Crystalline B-granules of grass-snake islets of Langerhans have been shown to possess the shape of rhombic dodecahedra (a ≈ 11 nm, cubic body-centered lattice). Three-dimensional reconstructions from serial sections, optical diffractometry and comparison with crystal models were the techniques utilized. The significance of crystalline B-granules is discussed.
