Summary Chemical gametocides Ethrel, RH-531, and Uniroyal D513 were used in 1972–1973 field studies to induce male sterility in hexaploid triticale cultivars 6TA 131, 6TA 385, and 6TA 204. In cultivar 6TA 131, applications of RH-531 at 1500 ppm reduced seed set to 7.3, 2.8, and 14.1% at pre-, early and midboot growth stages, respectively. Ethrel at concentrations up to 10,000 ppm was less effective than RH-531. Little or no reduction in seed set was observed with Uniroyal D513. Applications of three chemical gametocides increased seed protein and decreased plant height and 1000-kernel weight in each cultivar.
