Ultramarine is produced in industry in blue, green, violet and red colours. Recently(2), we could show that very probably the blue colourbearing species are sulphur radicals, S3- and S2-. Green ultramarine contains yellow S22- in addition. The coloured species in red ultramarine is probably S2O. The nature of the various colour-bearing species was now confirmed in more details by further measurements. In addition, we investigated natural lazurite whose blue component is a Na—Ca-ultramarine with small sulphur contents in the crystal lattice. Besides, most of the sulphur was found to be in form of SO42--ions.

Ultramarin wird in der Industrie mit blauer, grüner, violetter und roter Farbe hergestellt. Kürzlich(2) konnten wir es wahrscheinlich machen, daß die blauen Farbträger Schwefelradikale, S3 und S2- sind. Der grüne Ultramarin enthält neben dem blauen Farbträger S22- als gelben Farbträger. Der rote Ultramarin enthält wahrscheinlich S2O als Farbträger. In dieser Arbeit wurde die Art der Farbträger durch Messung der Röntgenfluoreszenz, des Paramagnetismus, der Ultrarotabsorption und der Raman Spektroskopie geprüft und bestätigt. Zusätzlich wurde der natürliche Lapislazuli untersucht. Dessen blaue Komponente ist ein Na—Ca-Ultramarin mit wenig Schwefel im Gitter. Der Schwefel liegt zudem zum größten Teil als SO42--Ionen vor.
