Abstract:
Notes:
Abstract A study of the mechanism of exchange regulation between the different calcium pools in freshwater lamellibranch mantle shows: 1) that the substances concerned in this regulation, namely the calcium reserves and carbonic anhydrase, must be topographically in close proximity, 2) that the calcium reserves occur as small extracellular calcified granules localised in the interstitial tissue of the mantle (evidence both from experiments on homogenates and from histological examination), and 3) that observations on the sedimentation in mantle homogenates suggest that the enzyme is bound to the calcified granules. The role of such an enzyme-substrate unit is discussed.
