Description: Investigations have been directed mainly toward: (1) theoretical work oriented toward computations of the effects of atmospheric aerosols on the transfer of images through the atmosphere; (2) measurements of the polarization field in the cloud-free atmosphere as an indicator of the existence and characteristics of atmospheric aerosols; and (3) the design of a video-polarizer system for the detection and display of the polarization field of light utilized in remote sensing of the environment. In addition, a camera system is under development for characterizing the polarization properties of a scene (landscape, city, etc.) by photographic means.

Description: The effect of the atmosphere on remote image interpretation and transfer was studied under laboratory conditions. Indoor laboratory measurements were made of the reflection patterns of typical natural surfaces using a dual channel polarizing radiometer. Outdoor ground measurements of these same surfaces were compared to indoor ones to validate the findings. From these data attempts were made to construct an atmospheric remote sensing model that could predict spectral intensity characteristics of the remote image as seen by a particular sensor given the spatial orientation of the sensor, the atmospheric conditions, the time of day, and the type of surface being viewed.

Description: Several computations on radiation emerging from the atmosphere for different aerosol models have been performed and the reflection matrix of a given surface was defined by incident light signature analyses. A two channel polarimeter is being constructed for measuring the Stokes parameters of reflected light. Surface albedo measurements were made in six wavelength ranges in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectral regions for six different vegetated surfaces, four soil surfaces, and two roadway surfaces. The effects of polarization changes on the intensity of projected images were studied by using a rotatable polarizer in front of an aerial camera lens.

Description: The University of California has been conducting an investigation which seeks to determine the usefulness of modern remote sensing techniques for studying various components of California's earth resources complex. Most of the work has concentrated on California's water resources, but with some attention being given to other earth resources as well and to the interplay between them and California's water resources.

Description: The amount of solar energy reflected from various soils and types of vegetation has been measured as a function of sun elevation in six different wavelength ranges in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared regions of the spectrum. It is shown that there is a significant dependence of reflectance on both wavelength and elevation of the sun for all surfaces for which measurements were made.
