Notes: Abstract Some important primary structures have been studied and described from the chromities of Sukinda Valley in Orissa, India. The structures include primary layering, ‘Ball and Pillow’ structures, and cross laminations. From the similarity of the structures and texture of the chromitites with the sedimentary rocks, it is presumed that the chromities were formed by magmatic sedimentation under the influence of gravity.

Notes: Abstract Mineralogy, size distribution of grains, and variation in chemical composition of chromitite occurring in four successive layers in serpentinite, near Kalrangi (85°45′ E:21°0′ N), Cuttack district, Orissa, have been studied to decipher the mode of formation of the ore bodies. The parent rocks are dunite-peridotite with olivine, olivine-enstatite and minor chromite, the minerals being completely altered to serpentine or talc-serpentine near the surface. The ore bodies are of bedded nature, composed entirely of chromite, and are confined to the top of the dunite-peridotite sheet. Grain-size variation of chromite in different layers in the vertical section shows straight line character which suggests accumulation of chromite grains by the process of magmatic sedimentation. The normal distribution of size variation of the chromite grains probably means that they are the products of a single magmatic cycle. Cr2O3 and MgO in chromitite decrease and FeO and Al2O3 increase in the vertical direction, which is expected when chromite crystallize from an ultrabasic magma in an undisturbed condition. Ideas of repeated injection and convection currents are negated by the absence of rhythmic layering and cyclic repetition of ultrabasics and chromite.

Notes: Summary The relationship between amino acid substitution and charge change of proteins in the evolutionary process is studied by using a stochastic model. A mathematical formula is developed for the electrophoretic identity of proteins between two different taxa for a given number of average codon differences per protein locus. Using this formula, a reference figure is constructed for estimating the average number of codon differences per locus between taxa.

Notes: The stabilizing effect of κ-carrageenan on 0.15% solutions of coconut, glandless cottonseed, peanut and soy protein isolates was investigated at neutral pH ranges. Addition of 0.01 M calcium decreased protein stability by 75–88% in carrageenan-free solutions and only by 30% in solutions containing 0.2g carrageenan per g protein. The order of mixing carrageenan, Ca++, and protein solutions adversely affected stability only when carrageenan was added last. Electron microscopy of stable fractions revealed the presence of many 100—500Å protein globules, both complexed with κ-carragecnan and free in solution. Protein stabilization appeared to be related to the formation of double helix junction zones by κ-carrageenan.

Notes: Abstract Daily solar radio flux at six different frequencies in dm, cm and mm wavelength regions has been studied for 182 days from December 1, 1970 to May 30, 1971. It is found that the slowly varying component of the centimeter wave emission correlates well with the physical model of the coronal active regions derived by Sengupta (Sengupta, 1971b) from which, as he showed earlier, most of the solar soft X-rays of wavelength less than 20 Å comes. It is also found that the cm wave emission is consistent with the assumption that the emitting regions are optically thin in this wavelength range. Emissions in dm and mm wavelength ranges, however, show poor correlation with the physical model of the soft X-ray emitting regions. It is concluded that the preferred regions of cm wave emission are located in the same region of solar corona from where most of the soft X-rays comes, but are different from the preferred regions of mm and dm emission.

Notes: Summary The use of formic acid in the carrier gas improves the gas chromatography of barbiturates. Both, the peak area and the number of theoretical plates are increased, but there is no change in the retention times of the barbiturates examined. As a result of interactions between the solid support and formic acid, adsorption of the barbiturate is reduced considerably when formic acid is present in the carrier gas. In contrast, after withdrawal of formic acid, all barbiturates with the exception of N-alkylated derivatives are removed by the column-due to increased adsorption on the support material. A possible mechanism is discussed.
