Notes: Summary The distribution of lignin in normal and compression wood of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) has been studied by the technique of lignin skeletonizing. Hydrolysis of the wood carbohydrates with hydrofluoric acid left normal wood tracheids with a uniform distribution of lignin in the S1 and S2 cell wall layers. However, the S3 region of both earlywood and latewood tracheids consistently retained a dense network of unhydrolyzable material throughout, perhaps lignin. Lignin content in compression wood averaged about 7% more than in normal wood and appears to be concentrated in the outer zone of the S2 layer. The inner S2 region, despite helical checking, is also heavily lignified. The S1 layer, although thicker than normal in compression wood tracheids, contains relatively little lignin. Ray cells, at least in normal wood, appear to be lignified to the same extent, if not more so in certain cases, than the longitudinal tracheids. Other locations where lignin may be concentrated include initial pit border regions and the membranes of bordered pits.

Notes: Abstract The evolution of the boundary layer on day 33 of the Wangara experiment in southeast Australia is calculated with a higher-order-closure turbulence model. This model, which includes equations for the mean field as well as the second moments of the turbulent field, is described in detail. The mean profiles of wind, temperature, and humidity, the profiles of heat and humidity fluxes, the Reynolds stress distributions, and the height of the boundary layer are shown between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The results agree well with those from Deardorff's 3-D simulation and take relatively little computer time.

Notes: Abstract The local advection of momentum, heat and moisture in micrometeorology due to a horizontal inhomogeneity in surface conditions is numerically investigated by a higher-order turbulence closure model which includes equations for the mean quantities, turbulent fluxes, and the viscous dissipation rate. The application of the two-dimensional model in this paper deals with the simulation of the flow from an extensive smooth dry area to a grassy wet terrain. The mean wind speed, temperature, and humidity distributions in the resulting internal boundary layer downstream of the surface discontinuity are determined such that the energy and moisture balances at the Earth's surface are satisfied. Numerical calculations of the mean temperature and humidity profiles are compared with available observed ones. The results include the advective effects on turbulent flux distributions, surface energy balance, evaporation rate, and Bowen ratio. The sensitivity of the predicted mean profiles and turbulent flux distributions to the surface relative humidity, thermal stratification, and the roughness change is discussed.

Notes: Graessley's theory of entanglement was applied to several model distributions. The distribution functions chosen were such that the differential weight distributions were triangular with respect to a log molecular weight axis. The molecular weight level, breadth of the molecular weight distribution, skewness, and blending of simple distributions were studied in their effect on the steady-state flow curve. The governing factor for the shape of the reduced flow curve was shown to be M̄z+1·M̄z/M̄w2. Other general features of the flow curve predicted by Graessley's theory were discussed.

Notes: A method is given for the analysis of long-chain branching in polymers by using combined GPC and intrinsic viscosity measurements. A computer program was written to evaluate branching indices by a tabular, iterative method. The method was applied to the evaluation of long-chain branching in low-density polyethylene.

Notes: From the solubility of precipitated Co(OH)2 (s) determined radiometrically as a function of pH and ammonia content of the heterogeneous systems, the formation constants have been obtained for the following mononuclear hydroxo-, ammine- and mixed hydroxo-ammine-complexes: Co(OH)2, Co(OH)3-, Co(NH3)22+, Co(NH3)32+, Co(NH3)42+ and Co(OH)2 (NH3)2. The solubility of cobalt(II) hydroxide has also been calculated. The medium was 1M NaClO4 and the temperature 25° C.
