Notes: Summary Adjacent thick and thin plastic sections from control rat pituitaries were used so that individual cells could be identified and studied. The corticotroph of the rat adenohypophysis was readily recognized at both light and electron microscopic levels. There was an absolute correlation among PAS intensity, reaction product of the immunocytochemical technique and granule localization. It was concluded that the secretory granules of the rat pituitary corticotroph were PAS positive.

Notes: Abstract A technique combining the advantages of conformal mapping and boundary collocation arguments for calculating stress intensity factors for cracks in plane problems is described. The difficulty of finding the mapping function on a rigidly prescribed parameter region is avoided at the expense of using boundary collocation methods on part of the boundary. Conventional collocation arguments are modified by prescribing stress, force, and moment conditions in a least-square collocation sense. These pseudo-redundant conditions provide a reasonable basis for estimation of the effects of inaccuracy of the boundary conditions. The technique is applied to the problem of a circular disk with an internal crack under a loading of external hydrostatic tension.

Notes: Abstract The plane problem of a central crack in a rectangular sheet of orthotropic material is considered. The solution is found by an extension of the modified mapping-collocation technique, originally formulated for plane isotropic analysis. Application of the technique outlined in this paper for plane orthotropic problems to a wider class of geometries and loading is evident. The numerical results indicate a dependence of the orthotropic stress intensity factors on both geometric and elastic constants over a certain parameter range.

Notes: The various fragmentations of the o-nitrobenzanilide molecular anion have been studied by labelling procedures and substituent effects. The loss of HO· from the molecular anion is a specific proximity effect, involving the oxygen of the nitro group and the hydrogen of the amide moiety. The losses of NO· from variously substituted nitrobenzenes are considered in depth and it is suggested that the nitro→ nitrite rearrangement is a radical reaction. Negative-ion mass spectrometry may be used for the structure determination of sulphonamides and nitrophenylhydrazones.

Notes: The molecular anions of nitrobenzenes containing an electron-withdrawing substituent eliminate NO· via a skeletal rearrangement process in the order ortho 〉 para 〉 meta. An ortho substituted nitrobenzene may eliminate a neutral molecule after the loss of NO· Hydrogen-rearrange-ment processes, hydrogen-scrambling processes, and unusual concerted eliminations are noted in certain spectra. Isomeric nitrobenzenes are generally more readily differentiated by negative-ion than positive-ion mass spectrometry.
