Description: The criteria for cargo handling at the operational site of space shuttles are presented, based on assumed program requirements. The concepts for the following functions are described: maintenance and checkout facility, transfer to launch pad, and launch pad. The requirements for the ground equipment are given along with the general sequences for cargo loading.

Description: A comparison was made between the methods of access utilized, or proposed, by the military, commercial airlines, and the space shuttle Phase B contractors. The methodology was subjected to consideration for space shuttle use and similarity to current space shuttle access concepts. The Phase B contractor concepts were in turn examined for degree of use of the state-of-the-art and progressive extension of new cost-effective ideas. This comparison disclosed a need for better definition of the criteria/requirements for space shuttle access equipment. Preliminary criteria, needed prior to initiation of the detail design (Phase C/D effort) of ground hardware for the operational site, are presented.

Description: Limited tests were conducted using 1/27 scale model of a Titan 3C booster plus 1/32.9 and 1/15.6 scale models of a solid rocket booster case to establish some of the characteristics that will effect recovery operations in open seas. This preliminary effort was designed to provide additional background information for conceptual development of a waterborne recovery system for space shuttle boosters, pending initiation of comprehensive studies. The models were not instrumented; therefore, all data are qualitative (approximations) and are based on observations plus photographic coverage.

Description: Subarea 3 landings totalled only 310 t in 2000, representing a slight increase from 19 t in 1999 and representing the third consecutive year of very low abundance, with landings of less than 1000 t. Landings in 2000 were exclusively from the inshore Newfoundland jig fishery in Div. 3KL and primarily during September-October. Samples acquired from the commercial fishery at two inshore localities indicated that mean mantle lengths for both sexes were much smaller than in 1998 and were generally comparable with the smallest observed since 1976, for comparable time periods. Coincident with such small size, male sexual maturation was less advanced than in previous years. Small mean length at Newfoudland in 2000 was consistent with small mean weights observed in 2000 from surveys during July on the Scotian Shelf and during autumn on the northeast USA Shelf. Such small size is believed to reflect a low proportion of squid from late spawning.
