Notes: Abstract Determination of the critical thermal maxima and upper lethal temperatures for Acartia tonsa Dana and A. clausi Giesbrecht revealed the relative temperature tolerance of the two species. A. tonsa exhibited a wider range of acclimation temperatures compared to A. clausi. The response of A. tonsa is related to its ubiquity in Atlantic Ocean estuaries (temperate and tropical), and its capacity to live in temperate waters throughout most of the year. Differences between upper lethal temperatures and critical thermal maxima were very narrow for A. tonsa from tropical and subtropical areas. This suggests that, in warm climates, this copepod lives close to its upper lethal temperature limits.

Notes: Abstract The rate of DNA synthesis in the course of the division cycle in root meristem ofAllium cepa growing under constant temperature and aeration conditions has been studied by means of treatment with AdR, as a specific inhibitor of the synthesis, as well as by the incorporation of tritiated thymidine. The one-hour treatment with AdR or tritiated thymidine was given at various hours in the course of the interphase of a synchronous population of binucleate cells induced by caffeine. In the case of AdR, sensitivity to the inhibition of DNA synthesis was studied by recording the delays produced by the treatment in the appearance of biprophases and bitelophases. The selection by the use of caffeine, of spontaneously synchronous populations of cells going through the telophase and becoming binucleate and the detection of the first biprophases in the subsequent mitosis provide a highly synchronized system with which to study the incorporation of tritiated thymidine during the interphase. The curves representing sensitivity to the inhibition of DNA synthesis by AdR and the rate of tritiated thymidine incorporation coincide, so that we can regard the delays, under our conditions, as proportional to the rate of DNA synthesis at the moment of the AdR treatment. This rate, in the S period, was found to be variable by both methods, being higher in the first and the last thirds of the S period (S1 and S3) and lower in the middle third (S2).

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The main rock types and mineral assemblages of the metamorphic rocks of the territory of Chile are described, and the metamorphic facies are identified. The crystalline basement of Chile consists of predominantly low-grade, semipelitic metamorphic and granitic rocks, exposed mostly along the coastal area of Central and Southern Chile, and in isolated areas of Northern Chile. Radiometric ages of both metamorphic and igneous rocks indicate Late Paleozoic. Three metamorphic series were recognized in Central Chile and used for a tentative classification of the metamorphic rocks from the remaining areas. The series correspond to intermediate-high pressure, intermediate-low pressure, and low pressure conditions of metamorphism, respectively. The formation of these series, their relation toMiyashiro's circumpacific paired belts, and the role of the basement during the Andean orogeny, are briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The dynamical susceptibility of thes-d-model is calculated in second order. It turns out, that only the impurity-impurity part of the static susceptibility contains logarithmically divergent terms. In order to obtain convergent results belowT=T k a partial summation is carried out for this part. The final result is expressed in terms of Suhl's spin flip scattering amplitude. We find an interpolation formula for the temperature dependence of the susceptibility with complete screening of the impurity spin forS=1/2 atT=0.

Notes: Abstract A rationally derived temperature index (SET*) which can be used as a biometeorological index of man's thermal discomfort has been developed by simple physical theory and has a valid physiological basis. The SET* index, when referred to a standard environment, has been tested experimentally as a measure of warm and cold discomfort for sedentary subjects under varying conditions of radiant heat and dry and wet bulb temperatures. The reference environment is common to one normally experienced in man's daily living while wearing 0.6 clo with an air movement of 0.25–0.3 m/s.
