Notes: The preparation of L-lysine peptides (Lysn, n = 2-14) from polyL-lysine is described. Fractionation by ion-exchange column chromatography of poly-L-lysine hydrolysates on a preparative scale resulted in 0.2-1.0 g quantities of individual members of the poly-L-lysine series. The peptides isolated proved to be analytically pure and the optical configuration was fully retained, as demonstrated by complete enzymic digestion. Peptides higher than n = 14 were also prepared. They consisted of oligolysine groups of narrow and accurately determined size distribution. Potentiometric titrations were used both to characterize the products and to demonstrate the characteristic dependence of the dissociation constants on size of the peptide.

Notes: A variational method has been used to study the entrance and exit effects in a falling cylinder viscometer for creeping and noncreeping flow. The computed result indicate solution convergence for NRe less than 100 and agree with experiment within ± 0.5% for NRe less than 25.

Notes: The binding isotherm of 2, 7-di-tert-butyl proflavine on calf thymus DNA has been measured by dialysis equilibrium. The CD spectra of complexes of the dye and DNA have been measured, and the variation of the induced circular dichroism of the dye with the amount of dye bound (r) has been found. The results show that di-tert-butyl proflavine binds to DNA in a completely different manner from proflavine itself, since both the visible and ultraviolet CD spectra of complexes of the two dyes with DNA differ markedly. The conformation of the nucleic acid is not affected by the binding of di-tert-butyl proflavine. It is possible that these results may allow determination, by using CD spectroscopy, of whether molecules intercalate into DNA.

Notes: Laser-excited Raman spectra of tRNAPhe from yeast and of fractionated 16S and 23S rRNA from E. coli are reported for samples in aqueous solution and in the solid state. The Raman scattering spectrum of each RNA is not significantly altered by the change from an aqueous to a solid environment and displays the same characteristic frequencies and intensities associated with ordered polyribonucleotide structures. Unlike DNA, the backbone conformation of RNA thus appears to be largely insensitive to gross changes in the degree of hydration.Raman scattering from the phosphate group vibrations of aqueous tRNAyeastPhe is qualitatively and quantitatively the same as obtained from previously studied tRNA's and is indicative of a highly ordered conformational structure in which some 85% of the nucleotide residues are in ordered configurations. The major differences observed between spectra of tRNA and rRNA are attributed to differences in base composition of these RNA's.

Notes: The concentration dependence of the rheological response of aqueous Separan solutions was measured. The shear and primary normal stress response in steady shearing flow, and the relaxation of shear stress following cessation of steady shear flow, were measured with four different polymer solution concentrations. Two different nonlinear constitutive equations, Bird-Carreau and Meister, were used to analyse the data. The Bird-Carreau model fit the steady shear data very well and the parameters obtained from steady shear data allow reasonable estimates of the stress relaxation of these systems. The Meister model provided a fit of the transient stress relaxation data and could be used to estimate the steady shear response. No quantitative molecular theory was developed in this work. However, the nature of the concentration dependence of the Bird-Carreau parameters suggests that as the polymer concentration of aqueous Separan solutions decreases from 2.0 to 0.05 weight percent the solutions should be modeled less by an entangled network theory and more as slightly overlapping hydrodynamic units. The concentration where this behavior seems to be changing appears to be about 0.25 percent by weight of polymer.

Notes: A study has been made of the influence of a dilating liquid, present during vulcanization, on the stress-strain behavior of EPT vulcanizates. Stress-strain measurements performed on the vulcanizates after extraction of the dilating liquid, taken over a range of strain rates, indicate the effective absence of time-dependent behavior and suggest that a close approach to equilibrium has been achieved. From the experimental data, values of the C1 and C2 constants of the empirical Mooney-Rivlin equation were derived. It was found that both C1 and C2 decreased with increased precure dilation, C2 decreasing more rapidly than C1. The observed decrease in C1 is less than would be predicted by simple analogy with the Gaussian modulus; it is suggested that this difference might be explained by changes in network configuration and topology associated with the precure dilation.

Notes: The permeation properties of formalized poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes are described. The interest of this work is centered on the properties relevant to desalination by reverse osmosis. These membranes, when properly prepared, showed reasonably high water permeability, high salt rejection, and stability in the presence of acids and alkalies.

Notes: The properties of raw polymer and gum vulcanizates of several ethylene-propylene terpolymers with respect to thermal transitions, stress relaxation, and swelling behavior are discussed in relation to the influence of ethylene content and microstructure. It is shown that at high ethylene contents, the presence of associated regions, perhaps microcrystallites, in low concentration produces polymers having thermoplastic behavior. The degree of crystallinity is apparently very low, and polymers of nominally similar ethylene contents can exhibit disparate behavior reflecting differences in heterogeneity of molecular composition.

Notes: Copolymer triols were prepared from propylene oxide and glycidyl (α,α,ω-trihydrododecafluoroheptyl) ether or pentadecafluoroheptylepoxyethane. Cationic polymerization was used and block copolymers were obtained in the molecular weight range of 1,000 to 3,000. These copolymer triols were reacted with an 80/20 mixture of 2,4-/2,6-tolylene diisocyanate, giving polyurethanes with the same polymer backbone as the conventional polyurethanes based on polyoxypropylene triols and tolylene diisocyanate. It was found that these polyurethanes, containing between 0% and 45% fluorine, showed increasing adhesion to anodized aluminum with increasing urea bond content of the polymer. However, the fluorine content did not show the expected effect on adhesion. Isothermal gravimetric analysis showed that the heat stability of the fluorourethanes was lower than for conventional urethanes on a weight basis, only because the segments split off in heat degradation were heavier for the fluorourethane. This phenomenon might possibly also apply to urethanes with a fluorinated backbone. On a mole basis fluorourethanes might be as stable as nonfluorourethanes. It was also found that the thermostability, as measured by weight loss, increased with an increasing degree of crosslink density in the polymers.
