Notes: The results of a study to determine the biological stability of clear, colorless, biocide-treated PVC film are presented. With the exception of a resistant control, all the PVC film samples tested contained a plasticizer susceptible to biological deterioration. Biocide-treated and control PVC film samples were subjected to biological attack in soil burial. Portions of each sample were exposed to leaching and to weathering in a weatherometer followed by soil burial to test the stability of each biocide to loss by water and weathering exposure. Of the 32 biocide preparations tested only 2, N-(trichloromethylthio) phthalimide and copper 8-quinolinolate, a known effective reference compound, were found to provide good protection for treated film in direct soil burial and in soil burial following leaching and weatherometer exposure. Natural weathering outdoors confirmed the results found with weatherometer exposed samples. The N-(trichloromethylthio) phthalimide was less effective than the reference compound in suppressing surface growth. In addition, N-(trichloromethylthio) phthalimide may not be compatible with all PVC formulations.

Notes: A simplified method for predicting the washout of gaseous constituents from industrial plumes has been developed. This method is a linearized version of a more general treatment given previously. It is based upon an application of conventional mass-transfer theory in conjunction with existing plume dispersion models and accounts for reversibility of the adsorption process and liquid-phase mass-transfer resistance. The method presented in this paper is sufficiently simple to permit hand calculation, if necessary. This model is recommended for calculation of washout of gases from plumes under conditions where the gas exhibits physical or pseudophysical adsorption behavior. It is expected to apply with reasonable accuracy for gases with linear solubility relationships; accuracy for situations involving other gases is expected to be less satisfactory, depending upon the degree of deviation from this idealized behavior.

Notes: Conformational energy calculations based on describing the deformation of chemical bonds by energy functions allow the prediction of molecular geometries, heats of formation, vibrational frequencies, and gas-phase thermodynamic functions of compounds which contain bonds or groups of bonds whose properties are transferable from molecule to molecule.

Notes: This paper applies the principles of geometric programming to the optimization of the well-known Williams-Otto process. Following the trend of the articles published on this subject, two different objective functions are considered and the results are compared to those of other investigators. The dual geometric program is used to provide an answer to the question of why the optimal value of the objective function remains unchanged for perturbations in a certain variable.

Notes: Analyses of stretching of a viscoelastic liquid have been interpreted as showing that there is a maximum stretch rate to which the material can be subjected, and several physical phenomena have been explained on this basis. It is shown here theoretically and experimentally that the concept of a limiting stretch rate does not have general validity.

Notes: The experiments reported here show how diffusion rates in liquids can be increased by as much as an order of magnitude by use of coupled diffusion fluxes in mixed solvents. Solutes whose diffusion can be accelerated in this way include simple electrolytes, essential oils, dyes, and antibiotics. These increases are primarily caused by thermodynamic interactions and can be estimated from solubilities.
