Notes: SUMMARY– Sonic and ultrasonic measurements were made on bovine bone to explore their possible value in objectively determining chronological age of a beef animal carcass. The sonic resonant frequency of the bone and the transmission rate of an ultrasonic pulse through the bone were measured on the right large metacarpal bone of slaughtered beef animals of different ages of the same breed. Thirty-four bones from animals approximately 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30 months of age were measured. The simple correlation coefficient between animal age and the sonic resonance parameter, (FLP was 0.875 and between age and the ultrasonic velocity parameter, (cm/μsec)2 was 0.866.

Notes: The “ring average” method of generating trend surfaces has been applied to water chemistry data from shallow water wells in southern Illinois. The method is a slight modification of a well-known geophysical technique. Basically the method acts as a filter which removes anomalies with dimensions smaller than the diameter of the ring. The trend maps generated by the technique are presented and discussed in this paper. Between the Salem-Woodward structural block and the Wabash Valley Fault Zone water chemistry shows marked changes. These changes suggest that this is a zone of upward moving waters from deep stratigraphic units. The process of reverse osmosis filtration appears to explain some observed phenomena, but by no means all of them. The reasons why the bounding structural features are so effective is not clear either.

Notes: : As a part of a water quality survey of the Spoon River, Illinois, algal genera were identified and their densities were enumerated. Weekly samples were collected at five stations starting on June 1, 1971. This report presents the first year's results. Algal densities for each station were found to be distributed geometrically normal. Total algal densities increased as water progressed downstream. Although water temperature has been observed to be an important factor affecting the density and the composition of algae in streams, attempts to correlate algal densities with temperatures for the Spoon River were not fruitful. Correlations of algal densities with dissolved oxygen, flow, and coliform densities also could not be made. The dominant genera observed were Cyclotella, Navicula, Scenedesmus, and Euglena. On the average diatoms accounted for 87% of all algae counts. The average diversity indices varied about 1.0 to 1.5 for five stations. There did not appear to be any advantage in the use of diversity index over that of algal density and genera richness in characterizing algae in the Spoon River.

Notes: The role of water resources in the urban economic and social environment, particularly in the inner city, has never been established to the degree necessary for making informed decisions on investments in urban waterway and shoreline improvements. The basic tools for measuring psychological and social impacts of waterway and shoreline developments in the inner city have not been fully developed and utilized to date. However, through a detailed analysis of the water resources in the urban core area of Cleveland, it appears that deliberate development of water-based recreation and other environmental resources can lead to improvement in some of the social problems of the inner city. In recreation analysis, there is currently a great gap between methodologies that are conceptually sound and those that have been applied by urban and water-resources planning agencies. New tools and methodologies can only be used successfully when public agencies are given the institutional and policy means for using them equitably in light of social needs. Present urban-water planning practices have been found to be biased against the inner city, often unintentionally.

Notes: : Teodoro Ardemans, first post-Renaissance water expert of Spain, recognized problems of ground-water contamination, influence of minerals on water quality, and mutual interference between closely spaced wells. He is also noted for his achievements in architecture and the writing of the first comprehensive building code for Madrid.
