Description / Table of Contents:
Abstract:
Notes:
Abstract The calcified byssus ofAnomia consists largely of mineral (96–98%) made up principally of aragonite with traces of calcite. The amino-acid composition of the organic fraction is characteristic of calcified secretions in general, but differs in some ways from those of bivalve shells. Neutral sugars represent 3.4% of the weight of the organic matrix, hexosamines (principally glucosamine) 19.2%.
