Notes: Abstract The paper is intended to illustrate that nonlinear optical phenomena yield useful information about structural phase transitions in crystals. Emphasis is placed on collinear second harmonic generation (SHG) and on second harmonic scattering (SHS). The temperature dependence of higher-rank tensors describing SHG is discussed in detail and is related to variations of long- and short-range order. Several kinds of SHS are considered and explained by modulations of the nonlinear optical susceptibility. Particular attention is paid to results obtainable by SHS, but not by ordinary scattering of light.

Notes: Summary Foliar application of two spring wheat varieties, Anza and Yecora 70, with RH-531 several days before meiosis in a field experiment almost completely prevented seed development. A single application of 2.0 kg a. i. (active ingredient) of RH-531 per ha with a surfactant gave maximum reduction in fertility. Pollen stainability by acetocarmine was only slightly reduced by RH-531. To reduce fertility to 10% or less, treatment should be made just prior to or at the time of meiosis (jointing stage with flag leaf emerged). The two varieties studied differed greatly in their response to RH-531; however, most of the difference could be attributed to differences in growth stage at the time of treatment. Anza showed increased spike density and thickened floral tissues and was apparently more sensitive to RH-531 than Yecora 70. Even though sterility was induced, the floret response was not typical of a male-sterile wheat and was not favorable to outcrossing. More than 98% of the seeds produced by open-pollination on treated plants were the result of self-pollination as determined by progeny testing. Further experience with RH-531 is necessary to determine whether this compound affects the normal development of male and/or female gametes. Both varieties showed reduction in plant height due to RH-531 treatment, although Yecora 70, a ‘triple dwarf’ type, showed less reduction than Anza, a short-statured variety.

Notes: Summary We compare the OC-curvesL n.c (p) (1) andL n.c * (p) (2). The first is founded on the binomial distribution, the latter relates to the Poisson distribution and is often used as approximation. These OC-curves occur in Statistical Quality Control as probabilities for the acception of a lot as approximations for such probabilities; they are regarded as functions of the fraction defectivep. It is shown that the two OC-curves have exactly one intersection point between 0 and 1, if the acceptance numberc is ≧1 and the sample sizen is 〉c+1. Forp between 0 and the intersection pointp s we have thenL n.c.(p)〉L n.c * (p); from p s 〈p≦1 followsL n.c(p)〈L n.c * (p). An interval is given which coversp s and with an example it is shown how one might use the results of this paper for the construction of sampling plans.

Notes: Abstract Through the azocoupling of Val5-angiotensin II-Asp1-β-amide (Hypertensin-CIBA) with p-halogene substituted benzenediazonium salts the possibility is shown for quantitative determination of polypeptides containing tyrosine and/or histidine. 1 to 2 nanomoles of the coupling-product could be measured photometrically. The detection limit can be lowered, if the polypeptide is coupled with a radioactive labelled diazonium salt. The preferable reaction conditions for diazotising and coupling are reported. The reaction-product showed an uniform behaviour in the used paper-chromatographic system. Probably it is a monoazo compound. Under the chosen conditions the tyrosyl group is very likely the reacting part of the hypertensin molecule.

Notes: 3,3,3-Trichloropropylene oxide (TCPO) is a monomer which has the combination of a highly reactive epoxide group and a stable trichloromethyl group. The epoxy group will undergo ring opening polymerizations with itself and with a host of other compounds to yield polymeric materials. Water, alcohols, phenols, amines, carboxylic acids and many other compounds react with TCPO with the aid of Lewis acid type catalysts. The electron-withdrawing influence of the trichloromethyl group, steric effects and the oxirane ring have a strong influence on the course of reactions, which are often radically different from that encountered with the simpler alkylene oxide monomers.
