Notizen: Flow at the entrance of a tube or channel is of interest in many polymer processes. Except for mathematical treatments at high Reynolds numbers and in creeping Newtonian flow, one must turn to empirical correlating equations and qualitative observations. These are discussed in two parts, one on pressure drop and the other on flow patterns. The discussion of pressure drop is largely a review, dealing with inertial, viscous, and elastic contributions to the pressure drop in tapered and sharp-edged entrances; also presented are new data for a viscoelastic polymer solution in tapered cone entrances. In the section on flow patterns, stress birefringent data for a very elastic solution flowing into a channel entrance show an unusual effect: stress discontinuities, not unlike “shock waves,” upstream and downstream of the entrances. This is in contrast to Newtonian and less elastic materials in which the stress patterns change gradually between the developed flow region and the entrance region.

Notizen: The flow-assisted degradation behavior of polystyrene was studied as a function of solvent, polymer concentration, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution. To obtain data at concentrations as low as 100 parts per million by weight, turbulent drag reduction measurements were used to augment the usual analytical techniques of viscosity and gel permeation chromatography. Turbulent flow measurements were found to be a valuable technique for evaluating the effects of degradation: the drag reduction onset point provides information about the largest molecules in the sample while the flow rate dependence is related to the shape of the top part of the molecular weight distribution. For the polymers and flow conditions studied, the degradation causes a shift in the distribution to lower molecular weights with little change in the shape. This suggests a complex mechanism where the probability of bond scission is not random but varies along the polymer backbone.

Notizen: Thermoplastic interpenetrating polymer networks, IPN's, are defined as combinations of two physically crosslinked polymers. A styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene (SEBS) triblock elastomer was combined with an ionomer prepared from a random copolymer of styrene, methacrylic acid, and isoprene (90/10/1 by volume), and subsequently neutralized. Two subclasses of the thermoplastic IPN's were identified. A sequential polymerization method yielded the chemically blended thermoplastic IPN's (CBT IPN's). Melt blending of the separately synthesized polymers produced the mechanically blended thermoplastic IPN's (MBT IPN's). Stress-strain and Rheovibron characterization revealed that the CBT IPN's exhibited greater tensile strength and higher elongation at break, but lower moduli than the MBT IPN materials of the same overall composition. Analysis of moduli data with the theories of Takayanagi, Davies, Budiansky, and Kerner disclosed more equal dual phase continuity for the MBT IPN's than the CBT IPN's at each composition. The low modulus of the more rubbery CBT IPN compositions was attributed to a decrease in the effective chain end-to-end distance between crosslinks in the elastomeric (EB) center block, brought about by the synthetic method.

Notizen: Recovery experiments above Tg have been performed on glass bead and short glass fiber polystyrene composite sheets obtained from extrusion and subsequent hot drawing. A shift procedure has been applied to recoil data using the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation with the same values of C1 and C2 used for unfilled polystyrene. The data reported show that an improvement of the dimensional stability of a drawn thermoplastic material can be obtained by adding very low volume percentage of fibers. Moreover, all the recoil data have been reduced to a unique generalized master curve which takes into account the draw ratio, the filler content, and geometry, using a fractional distance from equilibrium as a measure of the recovery. These results indicate that the presence of the filler does not affect the recoil kinetics of the polymeric matrix.

Notizen: Dextran-g-poly(acrylamide-co-sodium acrylates) were prepared by partial hydrolysis of dextran-g-poly(acrylamides) with controlled numbers and lengths of grafted chains. This hydrolysis route proved to be more effective than Ce(IV)-induced cografting of acrylamide and sodium acrylate comonomers onto dextran in producing the desired graft-copolymer structures. The resulting copolymers were characterized and the effects of composition, temperature, ionic strength, and shear rate on dilute solution rheological properties were studied.

Notizen: The capillary flow instability resulting in extrudate distortion has been studied for ethylene polymer melts using a molecular structure approach. It is found that the instability initiates at a critical value of elastic strain energy independent of (average) molecular weight for linear polyethylene. Once the flow breaks down, a slip interface within the melt is formed near the capillary wall, causing an abrupt increase in volumetric throughput. The velocity gradient within the melt remains continuous through the instability, however. Low molecular weight species present in the molecular weight distribution of linear polyethylene tend to suppress slip. Blends of linear and branched polyethylene exhibit instability behavior characteristic of both components throughout the entire range of composition. Results are discussed in terms of specific molecular mechanisms.

Notizen: The thermal stability of polyethylene containing conventional antioxidants is adversely affected by contact with copper, by certain pigments, and by the addition of a few percent of polypropylene as a processing aid. Polyethylene inhibited with 0.1% of phenolic antioxidants has approximately the same oxidative stability when in contact with a copper surface as the unprotected polymer. A mechanism is suggested to account for the loss of stability in the presence of copper. Pigments vary in the extent to which they adversely affect the oxidative stability of polyethylene. Since several factors may combine to decrease the stability of protected polyethylene compositions, as determined by accelerated tests, it is essential that their contribution under service conditions be determined. The predicted life at temperatures encountered in service is determined by extrapolating accelerated test data to that constant temperature which is calculated to cause the same degree of degradation as would occur during the daily and seasonal temperature cycles encountered in use.

Notizen: The flow and processing behavior of commercial plastics is determined not only by the characteristics of the base resin but also by the presence of additives of various kinds. In this study the influence of a number of additives on the rheological behavior of molten ABS was investigated using a capillary extrusion rheometer and a Weissenberg rheogoniometer. The additives studied included molding lubricants, rubber impact modifiers, flame-retardant additives, and residual unreacted components remaining from the polymerization process. The mechanisms by which these species affect flow characteristics are described.

Notizen: The problem of the migration of impurities from plastic containers has been analyzed, and the effect of the outward diffusion of the container contents on the impurity migration has been considered. The system of equations describing the coupled diffusion problem has been solved using finite-difference methods, and an analytical solution has been developed for the initial stages of the mass transfer process. It was found that the outward diffusion of the container contents can exhibit a large effect on the migration of impurity if the ratio of the diffusivity of the container contents to the diffusivity of the impurity exceeds 100. Sufficiently large values of this diffusivity ratio and of the impurity partition coefficient can minimize the buildup of undesirable impurities in the contents of a plastic container.
