Notes: Several factors affecting texture of canned Blenheim apricot halves were investigated. Presence of polygalacturonase from Rhizopus arrhizus resulted in severe texture breakdown during post-canning storage. The degree of breakdown was proportional to the amount of enzyme added. Apricot halves at optimum ripeness were canned in #303 cans with 36° Brix in-going sucrose syrup preheated to 24, 60, 75 and 90°C respectively with or without added mold polygalacturonase. Addition of mold polygalacturonase to the cans resulted in rapid softening during the storage period. The samples treated with 36° Brix sucrose syrup at 24, 60, 75°C showed rapid decrease in firmness. The sample canned with 90°C syrup in the presence of mold polygalacturonase showed less softening during storage. Thermal effect on activity of polygalacturonase from the mold Rhizopus arrhizus on pectic acid was determined. Crude enzyme was more heat resistant than the purified enzyme. There was 13.5% residual polygalacturonase activity in the crude extract after heating at 100°C for 20 min.

Notes: [Auszug] Fossil agnathans were first listed from southern China in 1937 by Ting and Wang1 and, during the International Geological Congress in 1948, Young2 reported rich deposits of Devonian vertebrates containing the agnathan Cephalaspis. This material was never described and its whereabouts are unknown. ...

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 a, Photoreceptor layer from a 13 -d-old normal Irish setter. Photoreceptor outer segments have begun to elongate and contain well organised stacks of outer segment (OS) lamellar disks. Some of these seem to have been engulfed (arrow) by the pigment epithelium (PE). b, Photoreceptor layer ...

Notes: Abstract High intensity laser irradiation of a plasma can accelerate the electrons to relativistic velocities. For circularly polarized light the refractive index,n, of the collisionless plasma is then a time-independent function of laser and plasma frequency as well as laser peak intensity; but for linearly polarized light,n (i.e., the wave or phase velocity of the wave in units of the speed of light in vacuum) also becomes a periodic function of time. The deeper the wave penetrates the plasma the higher becomes the multiplicity of values ofn. This means that the laser radiation transforms inside the plasma into several nonlinear waves with periodically changing phase velocities.

Notes: The stability region of the helical textures in3He-A in thev s-H phase diagram is theoretically determined. Herev sis the superflow velocity andH (∥v s) is the external magnetic field. The pitch of the helixk −1 that minimizes the Gibbs free energy and the corresponding inclination angles ofl andd are determined numerically as functions ofv sandH. The NMR frequencies (two longitudinal and four transverse frequencies) associated with the helical texture are obtained.

Notes: The concept of the optimal synthesis of dynamic process systems with uncertain parameters is introduced. A structure parameter approach is used to theoretically derive the necessary condition for the optimal performance system structure, and an effective algorithm for implementing the synthesis method is presented. The results are applied to the optimal synthesis of a reactor-separator system for the dynamic start-up of two reaction systems.

Notes: An algorithmic-evolutionary approach to the systematic synthesis of minimum cost networks of exchangers, heaters, and coolers is proposed. The new approach is easy to apply by hand calculations, requiring no special mathematical background and computational skill from the user. In addition to generating many cheaper networks for sample problems ranging in size from 4 to 10 streams as compared to previous studies, the proposed method provides an explicit theoretical guidance on the optimal exchange among hot and cold streams and on the optimal locations of heating and cooling utilities in the network. It also has a provision for the use of stream splitting and for generating a cyclic network. The new method is particularly effective in the synthesis of minimum cost networks for industrial crude unit preheat recovery.

Notes: A new and simple algorithm based on the piecewise maximization of the Hamiltonian and a limiting process utilizing a penalty function of the control variables for the computation of suboptimal singular and/or bang-bang control, previously developed and applied to linear lumped systems in Part I, is tested on four typical nonlinear lumped and distributed systems of particular chemical engineering interest. The computational results have shown that the proposed algorithm is a very effective method for solving singular and/or bang-bang control problems with high state dimensionality, extreme nonlinearity, and multiple controls.
