Temperature Dependance of the Crystal and Molecular Structure of a Highly Symmetric TetraazastannaneThe Tetraazastannane 1,3,5,7-Tetrakis(tert.-butyl)-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1,3,5,7-tetraaza-2,6-disila-4-stannospiro[3.3]heptane crystallizes at room temperature in the monoclinic space group C2/c with 4 molecules per unit cell. The equality of two cell-edges is quite remarkable: a = c = 18.604 (10), b = 8.993(5) Å; β = 111.6(1)°; V = 2894.7 Å3 (193 K). The structure has been refined to an R = 0,05 using 1804 independent reflections. The molecules occupy a 2(C2) site symmetry, but the inherent symmetry of the molecule deviates not much from 42m(D2d). Sn—N and Si—N bond lengths are 2.03 and 1.73 Å respectively. The above pseudo-ortho rhombic cell changes into al truly orthorhombic cell when the temperature is raised (〉365K). According to powder patterns an intermediate phase (341-365 K) is passed before. The high temperature phase crystallizes in space group Fddd with 8 molecules per unit cell (a = 20.47(2), b = 9.657)(7), c = 31.06(5) Å; V = 6137 Å3; single crystal data at 370 K), the molecules attaining the site symmetry 222 (D2. As can be derived from atomic coordinates of the low-and high-temperature phases the molecules have almost identical X and Z but different Y parameters. Following the principles of Kitaigorodsky the molecule thus suffers a loss of symmetry by packing (42m → 2), but recovers partially when heated in the solid (2 → 222).
Notes:
