    Notes: Summary The change in membrane capacitance and conductance of squid giant axons during hyper- and depolarizations was investigated. The measurements of capacitance and conductance were performed using an admittance bridge with resting, hyperpolarized and depolarized membranes. The duration of DC pulses is 20–40 msec and is long enough to permit the admittance measurements between 1 and 50 kHz. The amplitudes of DC pulses were varied between 0 and 40mV for both depolarization and hyperpolarization. Within these limited experimental conditions, we found a substantial increase in membrane capacitance with depolarization and a decrease with hyperpolarization. Our results indicate that the change in membrane capacitance will increase further if low frequencies are used with larger depolarizing pulses. The change in membrane capacitance is frequency dependent and it increases with decreasing frequencies. The analyses based on an equivalent circuit (vide infra) gives rise to a time constant of active membrane capacitance close to that of sodium currents. This result indicates that the observed capacitance changes may arise from sodium channels. A brief discussion is given on the nature of frequency-dependent membrane capacitance of nerve axons.

    Notes: The ordered structures of Cu–Au alloys containing 56 to 65 at.% Au have been investigated by electron diffraction and electron microscopy, using thin foils prepared from bulk specimens. Single-crystal diffraction patterns taken from specimens in the CuAu II phase region are interpreted basically in terms of the CuAu II-type structure. In the composition range of 59–63 at.% Au, however, the splitting direction of superlattice reflections at 110 and equivalent positions is not parallel to the [100] direction, but deviates slightly. To explain the deviation of the splitting direction, regular steps have to be introduced into the periodic antiphase domain boundaries of the CuAu II-type. The high-resolution electron microscope study has confirmed the existence of the boundary steps.

    Notes: Summary The effects of modulated radio frequency fields on mammalian EEGs were investigated using acute and chronic irradiations at non-thermal level. The EEG signals were computer processed to obtain power spectra. Rabbits were exposed to the field for 2 h a day for 6 weeks at 1–10 MHz (15 Hz modulation) at the level of 0.5–1 kV/M. Silver electrodes placed on the skull surface were used for recording of the EEG. Usually they were removed immediately after initial recordings of the EEG and reinserted before the final and intermediate EEG recordings. With this arrangement, modulated RF fields produced a change in EEG patterns by enhancing the low frequency components and decreasing high frequency activities. On the other hand, acute irradiations did not produce noticeable changes in the EEG at the level of 0.5–1 kV/M (1–30 MHz, 60 Hz modulation) as long as the use of intracranial electrodes was avoided.

    Notes: Abstract The procedure of computing the intensity and the polarization parameters of radiation diffusely reflected and transmitted by an inhomogeneous, plane-parallel planetary atmosphere is discussed with the aid of the adding method. If the atmosphere is simulated by a number of homogeneous sublayers (aerosols and ozone may be included), the matrices of radiation diffusely reflected and transmitted by the atmosphere can be expressed in terms of these matrices of sublayers by using only a couple of iterative equations with the polarity effect of radiation. This procedure is to be extended to the model atmosphere bounded by the surface reflector with a quite arbitrary phase matrix.

    Notes: Abstract A method of computing the diffuse reflection and transmission radiation from an inhomogenous, plane-parallel planetary atmosphere bounded by the hybrid surface of a diffuse and specular reflector is discussed by using the ‘addition’ method. If the atmosphere is simulated by a number of homogeneous sublayers, the radiation diffusely reflected and transmitted by the atmosphere can be expressed in terms of the diffuse reflection and transmission matrices of radiation of sublayers (Laciset al., 1974; Takashima, 1973, 1975). With this method (Takashima, 1975), the troublesome treatment due to the effect of polarity of radiation is overcome. Moreover, if the surface reflects radiation in accordance with the Lambert law as well as a quite arbitrary phase matrix (Takashima, 1974), the addition method can be easily extended. It is shown in this paper that the addition method is suitable for numerical computation even if the surface reflects light according to the hybrid mode of the diffuse and specular law (Uenoet al., 1974; Mukai, 1976).

    Notes: Abstract The diffuse radiation in the upward direction at the top and at an internal level of an inhomogeneous atmosphere is computed at λ=0.40 μm. The surface is assumed to reflect light in accordance with a hybrid mode of a diffuse and specular reflector. The objective is to estimate the effect of underlying surface characteristics in terms of the diffuse radiation field. By making use of these results, accuracy in monitoring the atmospheric aerosols would be increased for the use of remote sensing satellite techniques. Junge power lawv *=3 is adopted for the size distribution of aerosols (1963), while the data given by McClatchyet al. (1971) is used for the number density of aerosols with height distribution. It is noted from the computations that the diffuse reflection radiation is affected by the surface characteristics, even if the albedo of the surface is a fixed constant and very small.
