Summary The flow behaviour of suspensions of small air bubbles in glycerol was investigated in a rheogoniometer both by rotary and oscillatory experiments. As a result, the apparent viscosity increases below 10−2 r.p.s. This increase is more pronounced, if the coneplate or plate-plate system used has a narrower gap. Another result is the demonstration of elastic properties of the suspension, whereas the bubble-free glycerol does not show such properties under the same conditions of oscillating deformation. The elastic effects are larger too, if the gap of the plate system is narrower. The effects are explained as interactions between the plates via such bubbles that are in contact with both. The recoverable energy turns out to be of the same order of magnitude as might be expected from surface tension effects on bubble deformation.
Notes:
