Notes: Abstract The lateral or along-shore distribution of the polychaetous annelids of a subtropical, sandy, intertidal habitat in Florida (USA) was studied on three transects (covering 2.5 km of shoreline), sampled quarterly for 2 years. Although the average species number and density of individuals were not significantly different at specific tidal levels, the species composition was highly variable over time. Composition of density dominants was identical along-shore, and down-shore density distribution of selected species was also identical. Analysis by entire transects rather than by individual stations decreased along-shore heterogeneity by 10 to 15%.

Notes: Abstract Repopulation of the polychaete fauna of a defaunated, marine, intertidal habitat was studied for 2 years.Monthly quantitative samples from 4 stations, from just below mean high water to approximately 10 m below mean low water, were analyzed for species composition, density and distributional relationships. Repopulation occurred most rapidly at the highest tide levels, with slower rates of colonization at lower tide levels. Two species, Apoprionospio pygmaea (Hartman) and Magelona pettiboneae Jones, were density dominants for all but the first month of study. These species partitioned the transect spatially, with M. pettiboneae concentrated at the higher tidal levels, and A. pygmaea concentrated at the lower levels. First-year density dominants, Eteone heteropoda Hartman, Gyptis vittata Webster and Benedict, Nereis succinea Frey and Leuckart, and Paraprionospio pinnata (Ehlers), acted opportunistically by arriving early, quickly increasing their populations, and expanding their habitat distributions.Second-year density dominants, Capitita ambiseta Hartman, Minuspio cirrifera (Wirén), and Travisia sp., arrived much later, took longer to significantly increase their densities, and did not show habitat expansion.

Notes: [Auszug] A domestic animal is one whose breeding is largely controlled by man. Evolution of a domesticated species, therefore, results mainly from artificial selection, with natural selection playing a subsidiary part. The process of domestication implies the separating off of a breeding stock from its wild ...

Notes: Abstract The thermal behaviours of untreated cellulose (cotton) and samples treated with phosphorus and nitrogen-containing flame-retardants have been studied by means of the derivatograph and quantitative DTA, with the aim of revealing the advantageous features of thermal analysis in the investigation of the flame-retardation of cellulose substrates. The complex thermoanalytical method applied proved to be suitable for the investigation of the efficiency of flame-retardation in parallel with the oxygen index method and the determination of the phosphorus content of the sample. The efficiencies obtained with different methods are in correlation.

Notes: Abstract The thermooxidative behaviour of sunflower and rapeseed oils has been investigated by means of a derivatograph, using both dynamic and static (isothermal) temperature programs. The aim was to find the optimum experimental conditions for studying the oxidative stability of edible oils, in order to determine their storability. A novel method has been developed for the rapid indication of stability by modelling the oxidative changes under isothermal conditions.

Notes: Abstract The flame-retardation of Pyrovatex CP on cellulose substrate has been studied. Since levoglycosan, responsible for the fiammability of cellulose, is formed in the main decomposition process by dehydration, the amounts of water vapour released from untreated and treated cellulose during this process were measured. The water contents of the decomposition products obtained in thermal measurements were absorbed in dioxan and determined dielectrometrically. The results show that the water content of the decomposition products of untreated cellulose is much higher than that of treated cellulose. A reaction mechanism is suggested.
