Notes: Abstract Six recent examples of biological control successes are described with comments on how these have been achieved. They are that ofPromecotheca cumingi Baly in Sri Lanka,Diatraea saccharalis (F.) in Barbados,Mythimna separata (Wlk.) in New Zealand,Nezara viridula (L.) in Australia,Chilo partellus (Swinh.) in Pakistan andEupatorium odoratum L. in Sri Lanka (as compared with other areas). Each shows some peculiar features which may well be of interest when considering future biological control attempts. In general it is postulated that since the introduction of the beneficial species into a new area is the final test of its capabilities this should not be delayed in order to find out more about its detailed ecology, which may actually be irrelevant. Once it is shown that an introduction cannot be harmful it should be attempted, in order to obtain possible economic results as quickly as possible.

Notes: [Auszug] To investigate the generality of the findings of Herzen-berg et al.3 we examined the allotype specificity of helper T cells using the rat light chain allotype marker4. B and T cells from appropriate donors, primed several weeks earlier with DNP-bovine y globulin (DNP-BGG), were injected ...

Notes: [Auszug] THIS book is one of the first of a series of crop monographs; those on barley and potatoes have appeared and one on wheat is promised. According to the general editor of the series, E H. Roberts, the aim is to provide authoritative and comprehensive summaries of current scientific knowledge aimed ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,-We feel that your editorial (29 June, page 695) sympathised particularly with the problems of administrators picking their way through the 'minefield' of fixed term contracts and waiver clauses but gave short shrift to the scientists on short term research grants. Short term grants may be ...

Notes: Abstract Excited shallow donor and acceptor states are observed in excitation spectra of donoracceptor pair luminescence in ZnTe. The experiments yield a donor ionization energyE D =18.3±0.3 meV, and from the Li acceptor 2P 3/2, 2P 5/2(Γ 8), and 2P 5/2(Γ 7) states valence band parametersµ=0.60±0.10 andδ=0.22±0.05. The latter exceeds values derived from other experiments and indicates considerable nonspherical perturbations associated with this acceptor requiring an extension of existing theories for shallow acceptor states.

Notes: Abstract Trials with the parasiteEncarsia formosa to control whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westw.) on cucumbers showed that the most predictable results were obtained by the “classical” method of establishing a low, even infestation of the pest on the crop artificially before introducing the parasite. Other methods, more acceptable to the grower are described including the regular and routine introduction of parasites from planting until parasitised scales are found in the crop which also usually gave satisfactory results.
