Notes: Polycondensation of diethyl 2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxyadipate with various diamines was carried out in solutions under mild conditions. The polycondensation reaction occurred rapidly even at room temperature in polar solvents such as alcohols, and in aqueous solution a cyclic product was obtained instead of linear polymers although the reaction with diamines was completed within several minutes. Polymers obtained from diethyl 2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxyadipate were a linear polyamide having pendant hydroxyl groups, which decomposed on heating at around 200°C. A solid-phase polycondensation of the precursor polyamide yielded a high molecular weight polyamide.

Notes: Sebacates from alcohols having a 1,4-pyrone nucleus were synthesized, and their reactivities toward diamine were investigated. The polycondensation reactions of di(6-hydroxymethyl-1,4-pyron-3-yl) sebacate or di(2-methyl-1,4-pyron-3-yl) sebacate with hexamethylenediamine took place easily even at room temperature to form a high molecular weight nylon 610 in a quantitative yield. The reactivities of these active diesters with diamine were much higher than that of the corresponding diphenyl ester and were almost comparable to those of acid chlorides. It was also found that inorganic salts such as lithium chloride, zinc chloride, or calcium chloride had a strong influence on the molecular weight of the resulting polyamide. The reactivity enhancement of the active diesters toward aminolysis could be attributed mainly to the acidic character of the leaving group.

Notes: Unsaturated polyesters having pendant functional groups such as hydroxyl, formyl, aldoxime, aminomethyl and hydroxymethyl, have been prepared and characterized, and some of their properties were investigated. Reaction conditions for the epoxidation of unsaturated polyesters and hydrolysis of the epoxy groups in the polyesters were established to control the amount of pendant diol groups. It was possible to incorporate up to 90 mole-% of formyl side groups into the unsaturated polyester by the hydroformylation with the rhodium catalyst. In addition, the formyl side groups of the modified polyester were converted into hydroxymethyl or aldoxime groups and were then converted to amino groups. The melting points of the modified polyesters decreased with increasing the pendant group content of the polyesters, as expected. Aliphatic polyesters having pendant hydroxyl or amino groups had a high affinity for moisture, which might be ascribed to the participation of the hydrophilic pendant groups in the modified polyesters.

Notes: The sequence distribution of repeating units of copolyamides from different diamines with isophthaloyl or terephthaloyl chlorides and dithiophenyl adipate have been investigated either by interfacial or solution methods to aim at the sequence control of the copolyamides by solvents.Copolycondensation of dithiophenyl adipate and isophthaloyl chloride with m-xylylenediamine in various solvents yielded copolyamides having different compositions of repeating units. Aprotic polar solvents produced random copolyamides having the same compositions as feed ratios of the comonomers, while nonpolar solvents yielded copolyamides rich in isophthaloyl units. Also the sequence distribution of the copolyamides from m- and p-phenylenediamines with isophthaloyl chloride was affected by solvents; nonpolar solvents produced copolyamides having a less-random and block character of the repeating units either by interfacial or solution methods.

Notes: Direct polycondensation of various nylon salts (salts of dicarboxylic acid and diamine) took place under mild conditions in the formation of polyamide in the presence of polyphosphates and organic bases. Among organic bases imidazole was the best in terms of polymer yields. The reactivity of the polyphosphates was arranged in following order: pyrophosphate ≅ tripolyphosphate 〉 tetrapolyphosphate. Otimum reaction conditions were investigated in terms of solvents, temperatures, and concentration of monomers. A reaction mechanism was proposed for the phosphorylation reaction, due to polyphosphates, which led to the direct polycondensation of nylon salts.

Notes: Polyamides having epoxy groups and their ring-opening derivatives were prepared and characterized, and some of their properties were investigated. Reaction conditions for the low-temperature polycondensation of cis-2,3-epoxysuccinyl chloride (ESC) with aromatic diamines and the interfacial copolycondensation of ESC and adipyl chloride (AC) with aromatic diamines were established to obtain a high molecular weight polyamide having epoxy groups. In addition, the ring-opening reactions of the epoxy groups in the polyamides were carried out with various amines in order to obtain polyamides having hydrophilic pendent groups such as amino and hydroxyl. It was found that the polyamides prepared by ring-opening reaction of the epoxy group with ethylenediamine (EDA) or ethanolamine (EA) had a higher affinity for moisture than those with hexamethylenediamine (HMD) or n-butylamine (n-BA), which might be ascribed to the distance of hydrophilic groups from the polyamide chain. Those polyamides having hydrophilic pendent groups decomposed upon heating at less than 200°C.
