    Notes: A slow rate of cooling (1–2°C/min) is essential for high survival during the freezing phace. Death of cells during this phase takes place at temperatures below the freezing point of the suspending media, predominantly in the temperature range 10°C to −50°C. In the absence of cryoprotectants survival drops to zero between −30°C and −40°C. Fast thawing (water bath at 37°C giving a rate of temperature rise of 120°C/min between −50°C and −10°C) yields the highest recovery of viable cells. An interaction between cooling rate and thawing rate was demonstrated; this served to emphasize the importance of fast thawing. Under the best conditions realized in these experiments the percentage survival of cells cooled to −196°C was for carrot 70–75%, for belladonna 30–40% and for sycamore 20–25%. Storage for long periods (up to 10 months) at −196°C did not lead to any decline in percentage survival. Carrot cultures which had been stored for 10 months at −196°C showed no change in cell morphology or growth potential in culture and retained embryogenic potential.

    Notes: A basic technique for successful freeze preservation and storage at -196°C of cultured plant cells and an assay of percentage survival following the freezing-storage-thawing procedure are described. These techniques have been applied to suspension cultures of carrot (3 cell lines), belladonna and sycamore. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and glycerol, when appropriately applied, were the most effective cryoprotectants tested. Although these cryoprotectants were of low toxicity and did not cause alterations in the cytology and growth potential of the recovered cells, the cell lines differed in their sensitivity to the toxicity of these cryoprotectants. Small meristematic cells survived the freezing-thawing procedure better than larger more highly vacuolated cells. Specific differences in survival are in part explained in terms of differences in cell morphology.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal characteristics of the composites of poly(methyl methacrylate) and copper are reported, including the order of reaction and activation energy of the major second stage of pyrolysis. The randomly-distributed metal particles in the polymer matrix can form paths for heat transfer which determine the mechanism of thermal degradation.

    Notes: Abstract Electrical resistance measurements and electron microscope observations have been used to interpret the ageing characteristics of a 0.4% carbon-24% manganese-0.7% vanadium steel in the temperature range 550 to 700° C. It has been shown that vanadium carbides form in a diffusion controlled process, activation energy 295 kJ mol−1, producing precipitate densities in the matrix of ∼1016 cm−3. The kinetics suggest that nucleation depends on the existence of critical sized substitutional solute atom-vacancy clusters and that once the incubation period has elapsed the nucleation rate falls rapidly and beyond 0.1 fraction transformed further reaction takes place by growth only. Increasing amounts of deformation at the ageing temperature reduces the incubation period and total reaction time, progressively. The relevance of these results to help explain the ausforming behaviour of low alloy steel is stressed.

    Notes: Abstract An examination has been made of the kinetics of niobium carbide precipitation in a 18-10-1 austenitic stainless steel in the temperature range 650 to 750° C. Electrical resistance-time plots, thin film electron microscopy and hardness measurements have been employed to follow the ageing sequence. In these alloys the carbides precipitate on undissociated dislocations and in association with stacking faults; these processes are diffusion controlled and have an activation energy of ∼318 kJ mol−1. Prior to the reaction beginning a clear incubation period existed, e.g. ∼30 h at 650° C and 20 min at 750° C. During the first 10% transformation the carbide nucleation rate increases and the associated faults nucleate and grow rapidly. The carbide nucleation rate appears to peak around this level and then falls away gradually to zero around 70% transformation. At this latter stage fault growth ceases, and transformation continues by a carbide growth process. The age-hardening peak occurs much beyond the end of the reaction by which time precipitate coarsening is in evidence. The precise effect mechanical deformation has upon stacking fault formation depends to a major extent on the niobium supersaturation in the quenched alloy.

    Notes: Kinetics experiments have determined the reaction network in the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene catalyzed by sulfided CoO-MoO3/γ-Al2O3 at 573°K and 102 atm. The predominant reaction is a direct sulfur extrusion, giving biphenyl and hydrogen sulfide; the biphenyl is subsequently hydrogenated slowly to give cyclohexylbenzene and then bicyclohexyl. Dibenzothiophene also undergoes a primary hydrogenation reaction preceding sulfur removal, but it is about one thousand times slower than the sulfur extrusion reaction.
